The Carnegie Library
This former library was funded by the Carnegie Foundation. Andrew Carnegie made his fortune in the steel industry, and sold his company in 1901 for $500,000,000. He used this money to build libraries in small towns, funding 111 across Ontario. It was considered an honour to receive a Carnegie Library. In 1914, the Carnegie Foundation granted $8000 to Parkhill, and the construction commenced. The library opened its doors on July 28, 1915.
In 1992, the library was designated as a Historical Building by the Parkhill LACAC under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The Parkhill Carnegie Library is one of few Carnegie Libraries that remain unchanged. Many others have since been renovated or demolished. Today, the building is home to the Parkhill Carnegie Gallery!
Prior to the library, this lot was occupied by J. M. Gibbs Market Square, which had a few stores.
