What Is Job Shadowing?
Job Shadowing is a structured Career Exploration activity where a student is paired with a business partner, actively observing their workday. This experience includes interacting with clients or customers and attending meetings and appointments with the person they are shadowing.
The primary goal of Job Shadowing is to enable students to explore a field of interest, fostering the development of research skills and building occupational knowledge. Typically, Job Shadowing takes place at the workplace and spans most of the workday.
Job Shadowing is designed to:
Encourage students to delve into their areas of interest.
Offer an in-depth perspective on a specific profession, company, and industry, shedding light on the career journey within that field.
Bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world work environments.
Enhance career planning insights.
Job Shadowing is structured to:
Facilitate active listening, information absorption, and inquiry among students.
Initiate the process of students discovering their potential career interests.
Foster understanding of the educational and training requirements for specific job roles, career trajectories, and industry entry points.
Provide a platform for students to practice and showcase essential work-ready skills, including effective communication and appropriate workplace conduct.
Job Shadowing is supported by:
Classroom readiness, encompassing research on the occupation, its industry, and the host company.
Employer orientation and ongoing assistance.
Avenues for students to engage in post-experience reflection through both spoken and written means.
Job Shadowing is connected to:
Personalized career development and training plans.
Upcoming work-based learning opportunities.
The student's subsequent actions and plans.
