We had the chance to hold the screening of The Story of Plastics at a couple of libraries in NJ. This experience was really special as we were able to engage various age groups from all over the state to promote this film and also have a meaningful discussion afterward with the kids. We hope to continue holding screenings and hosting in-person events to promote plastics education.
The packaging on many items is unsafe and often contains large amounts of microplastics and chemicals. As a team, we organized a Halos packaging take-back event where we gathered community members to sign their names and send back the packaging to the company and ask for a sustainable solution. We were able to pose a biodegradable container and sent letters to the company. We were also able to get a response and signs of hope for changes in their packaging!
We had the opportunity to present virtually on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) at an International environmental conference during the summer of 2022. We met so many motivating environmentalists and learned about their teams as well as the work they were doing. We were able to collaborate with a couple of the teams we met after the conference and exchange ideas for future projects.
To help reach more youth we host events both virtually and in person on different plastics topics. For example, we presented on the harm of plastics to marine life to a high school biology class; and virtually presented on upcycling to youth across NJ. As a team we also conducted interviews with others working on similar initiatives, we had an interview with an activist from Kenya to learn about his story and goals. We hope to continue presenting to inform more students of the harm of plastics and the initiatives they can take to promote changes in plastic policy.
