Reflection by one of our student volunteer:
"I learnt that sometimes while we may have the right intentions to help others, we may not always be carrying out our actions in such a way that meets their actual needs. Throughout the prep sessions, the teachers repeatedly urged us to consider things from their perspective, and asked us if we thought whether they would want what we were proposing to help them with. I learnt that we may have certain preconceptions about what our target group’s needs are, but these preconceptions could be based on assumptions and harmful stereotypes, and so in order to ensure that we are able to make a real positive impact, we need to understand the group that we are helping and plan our programs such that we fulfill their actual needs."
