Afro Sam Tower
“A Tower of African Culture, Creativity, and Innovation”
“A Tower of African Culture, Creativity, and Innovation”
“Africa is full of amazing cultures, history, and creativity, but it’s hard for people to experience all of this in one place. Many students, visitors, and communities don’t have spaces where they can learn, explore, and enjoy African traditions and innovations together. I wanted to build something that celebrates Africa’s diversity, shows what African engineering and design can do, and gives people an interactive and fun way to connect with our culture.”
As a young student, I studied a combination of mathematics, physics, and geography in secondary school. I asked myself what if we have a place where people can get all the integrity of the African history and culture, and show the uniqueness of Africa.
That's where my ideas came to shine, I thought about the way I can combine my creativity, studies, and various elements to make the tower, which will incorporate the various things as follows
AFRO SAM TOWER PARTS AND COMPONENTS
In senior five, I take the initiative of thinking about how I can combine physics, geography, and mathematics to build a tower that will show the African culture, history, integrity, and uniqueness of our continent.
So I designed it on the board in the class, and the students said that the tower will never be as i think, and it will take me time, and i will fail in the class because the time i spent think and modify it, but because i have designed a similar prototype before of a small house, i knew that it would be possible to bring it to life.
So i found the teacher who thought physics and lab he told me that what you want i said i need the only cardboard just for starting building it, it took like 3 days of cutting them without putting them together after that i requested to the electric build and wires and battries and then i after making the circuits it right up and teacher said “ i will also invest all of mine but to see this art piece came to life”
Here are the components of the tower.
As the inspiration came from the shape of Africa, I designed it according to the shape of Africa.
And Madagascar, on the other hand, as they get away
Suspension bridges symbolize the protection we could have whenever we choose to work together and love each other
Underground parking: that was the way of land conservation, and we wanted to add the systems that could help us, where the user or the driver can come after reaching those parts, he can leave the car, and at that time, his car goes and parks itself according to the place it was parked.
The bridge between Madagascar and the entire tower: because the tower was surrounded by water, Madagascar was also in the water, so I designed the door, which has two functions: to act as a door, but also as a bridge. That time, I didn't have enough materials I used the thread to make them happen.
ACTUAL BUILDING
This building has 4 floors. Each floor has its specific purpose:
Underground floor: this floor was surrounded by the aquarium and contained fish and other sea creatures, where the people who will be there we supposed they have the same sense as the people who are in the silent place at the depth of the sea
In that place, we designed for restaurant where all the countries could have their own restaurant and where each country would serve the different food as their uniqueness.
First floor: We have designed these parts as the marketplace where people from different countries can come and buy the African products, and where all the countries in Africa will have a room and can trade their uniqueness in production.
Second floor: by promoting the entertainment, we have taken the second floor as the entertainment part, with a hall where different festivals could take place from all around Africa for promoting the unit and working together for making our continent a place full of peace, and where we can like to stay.
Third floor: the things in this world that never get old are books and history, so for preserving the history of Africa, we designed these parts as a place of library where all the countries could have their rooms for showcasing their histories, where people could learn from their history to change their future
Fourth floor: this floor was private for different people, like presidents and other people who need too much protection, that was the room we have preserved for them
Where these parts were so protected that even the elevator couldn’t reach them
6. Elevator
This building had the elevator wich moved from ground to the top and this i didint use microcontoller because at that time i didint had the knowledges in that so i designed the systems which uses the switch for directions the currents in different direction which couses them to change the direction
7. Airport at the top : for the developments of engineering i thought at that time what we add the top aiplane like that from the USA or dubai where helicopter land over the top of the building
Despite the challenges and the time it took away from regular schoolwork, I learned a great deal about mechanics, electricity, forces, and engineering design. This project earned me a prize during World Science Day, motivating me to explore more advanced concepts like electronics and protective systems.
The Afro Sam Tower was more than a school project; it was a vision for a united and innovative Africa, and a demonstration of how engineering can serve cultural and economic growth for more about this, click on the link below.
Why My S5 Marks Were Low:
In senior five, my grades weren’t as high because I dedicated a lot of time to building the Afro Sam Tower, a complex project that later won awards. Through this project, I learned real-world problem-solving, creativity, and technical skills—things that no exam could measure.
How I Made a Comeback in Senior Six:
In senior six, I managed to balance both projects and studies, and I performed very well in the national exams. This shows that my lower S5 marks weren’t a failure, but the result of investing in hands-on learning and innovation, which prepared me for even bigger achievements.
