About the Rec Hockey Program

Our goal is to help players excel in hockey and instill in them a love for the game of hockey. Our hockey groups include players of varied skill levels. We are an alternative to league hockey and we have often had players choose to pursue league hockey after playing in Rec Hockey and we've had players decide to change to Rec Hockey after playing league hockey.

The Rec Hockey program is a volunteer run program that runs most Saturdays starting in October all the way through the hockey season to the end of February. Our official starting/ending dates and no-practice dates are dependent on the scheduling of the Niverville arena. Our ice-times usually run early Saturday mornings and the age groups are determined by the amount and the age of our registrants. Our times will be communicated to registrants in a timely fashion once we have been allotted our times for the season.

In the 2018/2019 season we had 23 4-6 year old skaters, 25 7/8 year old skaters and 22 skaters in our 9-12 group. We had to refund registration to three 14 year old skaters because we did not feel it was responsible on our part to place 9 year-olds in a semi-competitive environment with 14 year-olds. Our goal is to include as many players who wish to play but, reserve the right to tailor the program to the needs of the majority.

All coaches are volunteers, drawn from the parents of our players, who do their best to provide a quality experience to players who want to learn how to play the great game of hockey without having the financial and time commitment that are associated with playing league hockey. Practices are at the discretion of the volunteer coaches, but we encourage our coaches to follow a practice format that divides the practice into two segments where skill development is emphasized first and is followed by a semi-competitive game where players can practice their skills.
