NIVALDO GODOY JR.
São Paulo, Brazil
Nivaldo Godoy Jr. is a Brazilian architect and interdisciplinary artist whose work spans architecture, set design, audiovisual production, electronic art, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. He began his artistic trajectory in the mid-2000s at FILE – Electronic Language International Festival, one of Latin America’s leading platforms for digital and electronic art, which shaped the early development of his experimental practice. His work soon gained international recognition, including an award from the Sitterwerk Foundation (Switzerland), supporting his research at the intersection of art, architecture, and technology.
Over the past two decades, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice combining experimental audiovisual work, immersive media, and architectural inquiry. His recent AI-driven animations — including OMA NONNA, EYES OF THE CITY — extend his interest in hybrid narratives and emerging technologies, while the short film SPITI deepens his investigation into memory and urban history through AI. His immersive projects IN-PLAZA and SÃO PAULO SONORA further explore the relationships between mapographies, sound, and urban narratives.
Alongside his artistic production, he develops scenographic and architectural projects — such as working as an assistant to Renato Theobaldo on the set design for AIDA at THEATER ERFURT (Germany) — and serves as architect for BRLAB, designing spaces for international audiovisual programmes. Sound design for the Brazilian play LEOPOLDINA: INDEPENDÊNCIA E MORTE. Earlier installations and performances — including (H)EART(H)QUAKE (Spoleto, Italy), BARRAGEM///SP, SONGS OF GOOGLISM, and CAOS.TICANTE — demonstrate his long-standing commitment to experimentation, electronic media, and cross-disciplinary creation.
Within the territory of queer dissidence and experimentation, his practice assumes a collaborative and political character. Alongside his partner, artist Panais Bouki, Godoy Jr. articulates bridges between space and performance, collaborating with fundamental figures of the Brazilian trans and non-binary scene, including Claudia Wonder (1955-2010), Galiza, EX PUNK ME. A landmark of this engagement was the WONDER 70 tribute at Sesc Pompeia, where queer memory was celebrated as a tool for artistic and urban resistance.
In February 2026, his new book SÃO PAULO EM CÓDIGOS (Sao Paulo in Code) was released, offering an in-depth exploration of how artificial intelligence interprets and regenerates the visual imaginary of his home city. The publication, which investigates the intersections of latent space cartographies and urban memory, was developed with the support of the ProAC/CultSP cultural grant from the Government of the State of São Paulo. This work consolidates his recent research into the technological mediation of the urban landscape, expanding upon the themes presented in his institutional lectures and academic submissions to international conferences such as SIGraDi.
