I am an AI-free mathematician (and educator), and I have signed all three commitments of AHM (copy-pasted below):
Members commit to not working with commercial AI companies by providing technical labor, mathematical knowledge, consultation, or publicity.Â
Members commit to not publishing mathematical texts (including papers, reviews, referee reports, lecture notes, teaching materials, and books) generated by AI models. Members only publish their own writing, as opposed to outputs of AI tools. We affirm that mathematical writing should have human authorship.
Members of the AI-free caucus do not use AI models in a research capacity. Members of this caucus engage in core mathematical activities, such as finding proofs, exploring examples, and posing research questions, without prompting Al tools.
(The first two are mandatory in order to be a member of AHM. The last one is optional, and signing it makes me a member of AHM's AI-free caucus.)
My refereeing/reviewing policies related to the usage/declaration of AI:
If a manuscript does not include a statement of declaration regarding the use of AI, or something equivalent, then I shall decline the request.
If a manuscript declares AI usage in a research capacity (as opposed to just minor editing related matters such as grammar correction), then I shall decline the request.
Finally, if you are one of my (potential) coauthors, I request you to declare AI usage (in our joint works that are yet to be submitted for publication). If your usage of AI violates my policies, I will simply step out, and request you to mention my name in the acknowledgments (instead of including me as a coauthor).
If you are interested in knowing my reasons for any/all of the above, please contact me directly by email, and schedule a meeting (in-person or online).
