Trained in indian classical artforms, Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattom, Nisha Pradeep started her journey at Nataraj Kalamandir, India under the tutelage of Guru Rajalakshmi Surendran. Nisha has a Masters of Fine Arts in Bharathanatyam from Annamalai University. Currently she is taking advanced training in nattuvangam from the Sri Swaminathan Pillai of the Thanjavur Bani style of Bharathanatyam.
Her Bharathanatyam aranagetram was done at the age of 13 and she continued to perform and learn with her teacher until she migrated to the US in 2002. Around 2007 she ventured back into an active dance life with local performances in the NJ/NY area. Exposure to various cultures and different art forms paved way for her to experiment with various collaborations.
Grants, Awards and Notable Contributions
Nisha was awarded the mini grant by Dance New Jersey in 2021. She staged her production Njaanapaana on an online platform as part of it.
She has taken her team to world renowned performance spaces like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, NY and made a mark in the events organized by PAE. Recognized specifically for bringing awareness about the traditional dance style of India to diverse set of audience.
Dance Advocacy
Her keen interest in history combined with her love for dance has kept her on the path of research and learning of Indian classical dance forms. Along with this she also tries to use her dance vocabulary to give voice to more current socio political issues.
Education
Nisha continues her Nattuvangam training under Guru Sri Swaminathan Heramanathan Pillai, who hails from hereditary nattuvannar/mridangist family. He is the son of late Sri. Herambanathan Pillai who is a renowned name in the field of Bharathanatyam. He is also a recipient of several awards and a torchbearer focused on preserving the hereditary knowledge passed down through generations.
