The hands-on workshop on DNA isolation and protoplast fusion, scheduled from 10th to 14th February 2025, offered an excellent opportunity for graduates, postgraduates, Ph.D. candidates, and research scholars to gain practical expertise in artificial horizontal gene transfer. This training covered the fundamental mechanisms, applications, and industrial significance of protoplast fusion in genetic engineering and microbial biotechnology. Guided by experts in the field, participants received in-depth insights into this crucial technique.
The workshop on mass spectrometry and LC-MS instrumentation, held from January 29-31, 2025, at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, was a valuable learning experience for PhD and research scholars. Participants gained in-depth knowledge of fundamental concepts, sample preparation techniques, and applications of LC-MS in proteomics research. The well-structured sessions provided hands-on training and insightful discussions, making it an enriching opportunity for attendees. The workshop attracted enthusiastic scholars eager to integrate LC-MS into their research. Overall, it was a well-organized and highly informative event.
Mussel culture in India combines traditional aquaculture with cutting-edge technology, fostering skills in marine biology, technology application and entrepreneurship. This innovative initiative meets seafood demand while providing individuals with a diverse skill set, positioning mussel farming as a catalyst for long-term economic growth and enrichment of aquaculture knowledge. To spread this knowledge, a tech demo of green mussel cultivation is being held for the locals in Verem, Goa.
Our workshop, held from 28th to 29th November 2024, was a resounding success! Participants thoroughly enjoyed the diverse sessions, including DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, zooplankton and phytoplankton sampling, and chromatography techniques. Led by Dr. Rakhee Khandeparker, Dr. Supriya Tilvi, and the skill team, the workshop offered both expert lectures and hands-on activities, which were highly appreciated. Attendees expressed great satisfaction with the practical exercises and discussions on marine natural products in drug development. The event concluded with a successful certificate distribution, leaving everyone eager for future workshops.
We are pleased to announce that our "Hands-on Training on SDS-PAGE" workshop, held from 18th-20th September 2024, was a resounding success! Participants gained invaluable practical skills, from sample preparation to gel analysis, and developed a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of SDS-PAGE. The hands-on practice, combined with insightful case studies and applications, was well-received by all attendees. The workshop proved to be an enriching experience for everyone involved, and we are grateful for the enthusiastic participation of all the graduates in science who attended. We look forward to hosting similar successful events in the future!
This workshop organised by CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa as part of the CSIR-Integrated Skill Initiative Programme (Phase II), finished successfully on June 26-28, 2024. The program offered significant hands-on training to BSc/MSc students and research scholars, with a focus on critical water quality monitoring techniques required for sustainable aquaculture activities. Participants responded enthusiastically to the program, complementing the practical approach and thought-provoking seminars. The feedback emphasised the importance of the course in improving their skills and awareness of promoting ecologically sustainable aquaculture.
Under the CSIR-Integrated Skill Initiative Programme (Phase II), the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography successfully conducted the "Biodiversity Assessment through Molecular Approach" workshop from 16th to 18th January 2024. Tailored for M.Sc. students and research scholars, the event provided hands-on training for preparing metagenomic samples and applications for statistical analysis, receiving positive student feedback. The workshop showcased CSIR-NIO's dedication to advancing research capabilities among students.
The Blue Economy Workshop, held on the 17th and 18th of August 2023 by the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, aimed to investigate the use of marine resources for economic development while ensuring environmental conservation. It brought together experts and policymakers to discuss sustainable strategies and collaborative approaches. The workshop emphasized the role of the Blue Economy in addressing global issues such as poverty and climate change. It emphasized job creation and revenue generation opportunities in fisheries and coastal tourism industries. The outcomes include increased awareness and policy discussions and forming partnerships to promote sustainable practices.
Shri Nilkanth Halarnkar, Fisheries Minister, hosted the 6th edition of the Aqua Goa Mega Fish Festival at the Secretariat in Porvorim from February 10 to 12, 2023 at the SAG ground in Campal, Panaji. This festival provided a common platform for stakeholders to come together to build a strong economy in the fisheries sectors. The skill development group performed a skit in which fish silage was portrayed as a saviour for the common man in the production of fertilisers.
Fish waste is converted into a liquid mixture of hydrolyzed proteins, lipids, minerals, and other nutrients that are easily digestible and act as a great fertiliser. Fish silage could benefit the environment by reducing waste levels, animal health by providing nutrients and bioactive components, and economic gains.
A 3-day skill training course was conducted to provide hands-on training on analysing various water quality parameters for sustainable aquaculture to fishery department officers from 16th-18th of January. This session aimed to educate fishery officers on the value of maintaining ideal water conditions for increased productivity in the aquaculture industry.
