CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO) is one of the 37 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. CSIR-NIO was established in January 1966 following the International Indian Ocean Expedition with the mission “to continuously improve our understanding of the seas around us and to translate this knowledge to benefit all”. It is a premier multidisciplinary oceanography institute with Headquarter in Goa and three regional centres at Mumbai, Kochi and Vishakhapatnam. It is engaged in research activities in physics, chemistry, biology and geology/geophysics of the ocean as well as marine instrumentation & ocean engineering. CSIR-NIO deals with all aspects of oceanography, from coast to deep-sea, in the Indian Ocean region. To support its research activities, the institute has two well equipped research vessels, RV Sindhu Sadhana and RV Sindhu Sankalp, as well as several shore-based modern state-of-the-art laboratories.
