The refugees listen to radio and television reports of an army of cannibalistic corpses committing mass murder across the East Coast of the United States and of the posses of armed men patrolling the countryside to exterminate the living dead. Various rescue centers offer refuge and safety, and scientists theorize that radiation from an exploding space probe returning from Venus caused the reanimations.

The film's music consisted of existing pieces that were mixed or modified for the film. Night of the Living Dead is the first of six ... of the Dead films directed by George Romero. To add some context to the throwaway line within the film about a radioactive satellite possibly leading to the raising of the dead, Criterion provides a 2-minute excerpt from a 1967 news segment on the Venus Probe. Following this is then a collection of trailers, including the original and the 2017 Janus re-release, 2 TV spots that are basically just truncated versions of the original trailer, and then 4 radio spots, two from 1968 and two for a 1970 re-release (the last one redoing one of the 1968 spots).

What they don't know is that an undead apocalypse is about to sweep America and Barbara's brother is about to get eaten by a shambling ghoul. In 1968, theater-goers were also in the dark, with no idea they were seeing a game-changing film.

What people got in Romero's film was their very first glimpse of what we now think of as zombies: shambling undead who hunger for human flesh. They're mindless and slow and kind of goofy looking, but nearly unstoppable. They just keep coming unless you destroy their brains.

Finally, the mystery is solved! All this time I've associated NOTLD with Creature Features, though it's clear now I didn't see it on that program, since I think I watched it the same night as you or after. It's understandable how Chiller Diller could have gotten confused with Creature Features. Both were great Bay Area horror programs with memorable intros. More than just a recreation of the story, the play celebrates the history and influence of the movie. Through a series of multiple endings, the characters are all faced with different issues and challenges while desperately trying to survive the night. However, their contrasting personalities and agendas always seem to prevent the group from working together. Which leaves us all wondering: Could anyone survive a night of the living dead?

This leads to the discovery of other survivors hiding in the basement, including Harry (Tom Towles), Helen (McKee Anderson) and daughter Sarah (Heather Mazur) Cooper and teenage couple Tom Bitner (William Butler) and Judy Rose Larson (Katie Finneran). There are no other vehicles and nothing around, so presumably everyone was just ambling through rural Pennsylvania when the dead woke up hungry.

While aimlessly running through the area, Barbara manages to find a group of locals who are combing the hills eliminating the undead. When she wakes up the following day, she finds herself in town and tells Sheriff McClelland about the tragedy at the farmhouse. Upon returning, hoping to find Ben alive perhaps, she finds him reanimated in the basement before McClelland shoots him dead.

As Helen looks around for her, Sarah ambles toward her from the shadows, clearly no longer among the living. Her mother can only cry and back up against a wall as her daughter approaches, mouth agape.
