Students will be able to perform effectively in the library and information science professions by demonstrating competency in the application of technology. By the conclusion of the master’s degree program, students should be able to:
Demonstrate effective use of current technologies
Explain the impact and potential of current and emerging information technologies for management and delivery of services
Organize and provide digital resources and services
Evaluate and select appropriate technology for specific information services or applications
Analyze issues, concepts, and challenges related to the impact of technology on information ethics and policy

Contemporary Information Professionals Podcast on Public Libraries
Through the group podcast made for the ISCI 701 Ethics, Values, and Foundational Principles course, I have demonstrated the technology core competencies. Starting with an introduction from the narrator and a brief description of the library sector, our group discusses the current issues and trends within the public library relating to equity of access, literacy and learning, and stewardship and service, concluding with advocacy for public libraries. This podcast communicates what it means to be a library informational professional in both historical and contemporary contexts with evolving technologies and issues. The podcast further identifies and examines the issues and core values of the library and information profession; including equity of access, literacy and learning, information policy, collaboration, and service.
This group project, being broken into two parts (researching for the script and recording for the podcast) allowed us to fully demonstrate the effective use of current technologies; explaining the impact on public libraries of current and emerging information technologies and services through analyzing the issues, concepts, and challenges related to the impact of technology on information ethics and policies. More specifically, how technology has impacted public libraries through the areas of equity of access, literacy and learning, and stewardship and service, presenting this research through the use of current technologies in the creation of a podcast. In this project, I took on multiple roles; being a producer (in maintaining group communication and project coordination), a sector issues and trends expert (researching and speaking on the topic of stewardship and service within public libraries), and the technical manager (overseeing technical process and infrastructure including: recording, editing, troubleshooting, and producing the final audio product). Given more time on this project, I think visuals would have been very beneficial in keeping video audiences engaged. Overall, this podcast was a great learning experience on the use, analysis, and impact that technology has on libraries.
This podcast was a lot of fun, but being a group project, it came with many challenges; predominantly around time conflicts and communication issues. That being said, I learned a lot from this experience and had so much fun collaborating in creating this podcast. I predominantly took on a follower and teamwork approach in the script writing process, making sure my section on stewardship and service fit in with the other sector issues and trends experts' research. That being said, I was in a producer role sending out emails reviewing what was discussed in our group meetings to those who couldn't make it. In the podcasting section of this project, I took on a more active role of being the technical manager and further expanding my producer role to coordinate the project for the recordings; I took on this role as I had previous experience from my BFA of working with audacity and premiere pro. Even with my previous experience, I still faced many challenges with getting the recordings to sound the same, though I enjoyed the editing process of adding music and cutting out misspeaking or awkward pauses. I would love to do another podcast in the future but I would like to incorporate visuals next time as I think it would be more engaging for the audience. I will continue to incorporate technology into my education and research, in new and creative ways that are fun and exciting for people to interact with.
