You are walking with your friends around your school during lunch. You are with a group of around four-to-five of your fellow close classmates. You are all seniors, so one friend poses the question of what everyone is thinking of majoring in college. You state you will major in mathematics as it is one of your favorite subjects. The guy posing chuckles and asks, “What do you even plan on doing with a major like that?” You look at him puzzled, wondering what was so funny about majoring in mathematics. Though cut off guard, you tell him you plan on becoming a high school math teacher. He looks at you; a slight worry painted on his face. He puts his hand on your shoulder and calmly states, “Math is a very tough subject. You should major in something more simple such as psychology. Or, if you want to stay in teaching, you should teach the younger folk, such as kindergarteners. Teaching high schoolers might be too challenging for you”. The entire group grew silent. You look at him, completely shocked by the words that just came out of his mouth. You ask him why he thinks teaching high schoolers math would be challenging for you. He states passively, “Every female math teacher I had didn’t teach the subject well enough. I just think a male teacher should teach math”. You are astounded and floored that he would say this to you. When you walk into your math class, you sit quietly at your desk, looking at your assigned classwork with his comments still lingering in your head.
