Previously, on the BirdLab news: our paper with Romain Lorrilliere, Anne Dozières, Carmen Bessa-Gomes and François Chiron had been accepted (May 5th).
And now... it is online! Many thanks again to all BirdLab participants! Below is what was the question we asked and what were the results we obtained:
Many thanks to the participants of the BirdLab program ! Thanks to the huge dataset collected, we were able to investigate competition for feeding resources in wintering bird communities.
In particular, we looked at how large and/or introduced birds may hamper the use of birdfeeders by smaller passerines. We compared three large species: the Eurasian magpie, the Eurasian collared-dove and the Rose-ringed parakeet.
On average, presence of the parakeet decreased the cumulative presence time of small species by 43%, an estimate qualitatively similar to the effect of the dove or the magpie. At the species-level, responses to the three large species varied in strength and direction, calling for further studies investigating interspecific direct and indirect interactions in these communities.
Participation to BirdLab thus remain extremely valuable to deepen our understanding of birds interactions. Participation will be possible next November, and we have some surprises in preparation :-) !
