2022
Polyhedral Pummeling is a game I developed with a team of 4 people as a submission to the Game Maker's Toolkit 2022 jam. This was a 48 hour jam between July 15-17. I did most of the programming alongside one other programmer while my other 2 groupmates developed artwork and music. The vast majority of artwork and audio is original, with the exception of ability icons, level backgrounds, and hit sound effects.
The jam page can be found here.
The theme of this jam was "Roll of the Dice." To fit this, we created a short almost-roguelike game about 3 dice who are pitted against the evil King of Diamonds and his card army. Each dice character can "roll" one of multiple die (each having the same number of sides of the character) to determine what action they will take. This action is applied to every character in an area (of the player's choosing) where the dice lands.
We decided to make dice actions affect everyone in an area, including allies for attacks and enemies for healing/buffs. The purpose of this was to spur thoughtful and strategic placement of dice and to discourage the player from "hacking and slashing" at the cards. Furthermore, each card has a specific targeting rule (e.g. closest dice, most healthy dice, least healthy dice), which forces the player to protect specific dice from attacks through thoughtful positioning. These both proved to be successful in making our game's combat more engaging, and also became the surprise of many players when they realized they could heal enemies and hurt allies, which made them think twice before attacking.
Approaching the submission deadline we had to cut some more polishing changes such as UI redesign (we used the default Unity buttons). This was my first jam and it was a bit intense in the workload compared to the short time frame as the primary programmer. I seemed like I was simulating "crunch time" on a project. I would like to do another fast paced game jam again, but will definitely be more prepared when the time comes.
After submitting our project, we placed 1,717th overall among 6,129 submissions! For my first jam, I was definitely not disappointed with the results.
