'Manhattan Banner' (2024)
Black-ink pen drawing, red-ink linoprint, (80 gsm paper), 3 metres
Over the span of several years at university education, I have grown increasingly fond and amused with typography. Recent studies of visually stimulating works from specific illustration-based contemporary artists, like Joao Lauro Fonte, Julie Marabelle and Paula Scher, sparked a sudden attraction within me towards the designing of riveting or comical storytelling via the use of flamboyant and exaggerated typography.

Admittedly, I rarely touch upon sculpture as a practice in my art projects; however, on this very occasion I was very proud and accomplished with my independent development of 'Rag Market Signage' (2023), following my ambitious incorporation of social science-based studies with the methodology of sculpture, and being moved by the very positive responses from the market personnel after its installation.
Academically partnered with the Digbeth artist-run gallery Eastside Projects in early 2023, my project's broad objective was to creatively respond towards the contemporary public landscape of the St. Martin's Rag Market at Birmingham City centre.
My choice of artwork in the project was influenced by the physical interior of the interior market and its current business environment. It focused on the fundamentality of navigation in a large busy space, as well as the dissemination of the at-the-time up-to-date locations of each business stall at the Rag Market. My inspiration for developing the sculpture was also guided by my learning of the insufficiency, or even lack, of existing navigational signage at the indoor market.
This led to the designing of a free-standing simple signage board that is covered with informative vector graphics, like a market blueprint and an array of icons for stall businesses.
