About Nick Mihailovic

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am definitely someone who has many interests and hobbies. I tend to flip flop between them from time to time because I find my taste for knowledge and skills continusouly growing. Some of the things I enjoy include playing chess, writing/journaling, working out, investing business, and spending time with my family.

The Inspiration

Upon recent publication of my children's book, I often get asked, "What was your inspiration?". Truthfully, it's hard to pin-point one exact inspiration as I have always viewed myself as a natural observer. I always found fascination in the many beauties and mysteries of the world, and cherish the environment deeply. I can vividly remember learning about the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon in the sixth grade and wondering what such a site must have been like to witness. When I was little I dreamed of being an astronaut just to witness the breath taking view of the Earth in full. That's when I realized I draw much inspiration from nature itself.

I also draw inspiration from the people around me, especially my family. When my younger brother Dylan was born I wrote a narrative about how special and meaningful it was for my life. My english teacher at the time, told me that story was so beautiful it made her mother cry. I knew I had a way with words!

Upon graduating high school, I had a difficult time mentally. I had recently moved away from my family to the vast city of Chicago to attend DePaul university. Each day, I would commute and solemnly wonder why I was so dissatisfied with life. One day, I was called to the practice of journaling. It was gradual at first, but soon it became a daily practice. I would write poems on my train rides downtown, and somber stories.

During this time, I decided on Thanksgiving break to go back home for a visit. I went to the forest my house to find peace and clear my mind. During those several days, I was moved to bring my journal into the woods and write a story. I wrote a bitter story about an old man passing away in the woods and becoming a spirit of the forest guardian of the animals.

Fast forward about a year and a half and I'm working as a customer service manager at Lowe's. I'm not going to DePaul anymore, I've taken a semester off and I'm preparing to attend Purdue Global University instead. Upon searching for some documents I found my old story labeled, "Forest Friends". As I reread the story I began to rewrite a poem in-between the lines which I later transformed into the children's storybook now known as Forest Friends.

My Calling Becomes My Passion

Originally, I had never actually intended on creating a children's book. I had no idea where to start I only had an idea until one day I met someone who changed my perspective forever.

After working as a customer service manager I got promoted to a Night Operations Department Supervisor at the Lowe's in Naperville. Upon this promotion, I decided to move back with my family. During my time in this position I met a worker named Alice who just so happened to be a self-published author. I shared my story with her and she loved it. She then gave me step by step instruction on how to create my book. Using the money I had been saving I followed her guidance. She then told me that once this book is complete that I need to continue writing about the same character. She advised me to make a series using the same character and that's exactly what I'm currently working on.
