Young adults have taken charge in the community through presence at local BLM protests, hanging signs to raise awareness, and taking to social media to fight systemic racism.
The first of four billboards in a series will appear beginning July 13th near the intersection of College Blvd and 85 and will be displayed for 4 to 8 weeks each. The artwork was designed and created by young adults in Niceville, Florida, each with diverse backgrounds and their own personal reasons for being involved.
After an effort to silence the Black Lives Matter movement in Niceville, through the act of a man, who apparently disagreed with their message ripped down their posters, and now they’re back with a series of billboards to make an even larger statement.
In mid-June, former and current students of Niceville High School received permission from the principal to hang posters along a school fence, calling for an end to racism. But not even 24-hours later, witnesses saw a man ripping them down.
The community responded with overwhelming support of the young activists and their message. Project I’mPossible, a local non-profit whose mission is to inspire young people to change the world around them became involved and in just the first 3 weeks of a GoFundMe campaign, the group raised over $7,000 from individual community members.
The billboards will not be the last you hear of the BLM movement in our area. After the billboards come down, the students plan to send the vinyl to Rareform to be recycled into bags and clutches. These products will be sold sometime in the fall and be an additional fundraiser for the group, to support further initiatives in the Black Lives Matter movement and other diversity and inclusion projects in Okaloosa County.
