Candidate Selection

DENIAL OF ADMISSION TO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

National Honor Society membership is not a right guaranteed to all students; it is an honor granted by the faculty to students who uphold the four ideals of National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

The Faculty Council may deny students who violate the student code of conduct or who are involved in an incident of cheating, (Note: cheating includes both in-class work, such as tests, quizzes, and homework assignments or any intentions of academic dishonesty.)

SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

    1. SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Jasper's selection procedure for National Honor Society is based on standards provided by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the national organization governing NHS.

Students should display behavior which is consistent with the standards of scholarship, leadership, and character. This includes taking an active part in club activities, being a role model for students at Jasper, maintaining proper student status, and showing academic and personal integrity in and out of the classroom.

All students must follow this process to be considered for admission into NHS.

  1. Attend initial informational meeting.

    1. Sophomores who have attended Jasper High School for at least one full semester prior to induction and who will have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher by the end of the fall semester are eligible to attend.

    2. NHS policies, candidacy procedures, dues, and membership requirements will be discussed.

  2. Sign up for Google classroom and complete electronic candidate enrollment form/acceptance of NHS guidelines.

      • The form will be "turned off" at the time indicated in our initial meeting.

  3. Attend subsequent meetings, displaying behavior consistent with the standards of this group. Students who cannot adhere to behavioral guidelines will be asked to leave the meeting and their attendance will not be counted.

  4. Complete at least 12 hours of community service.

  5. Participate in both fall and spring service projects.

  6. A Faculty Council will meet to review the candidates for membership and will consider the comments and concerns from the faculty regarding any candidate’s character, leadership, scholarship, or service and will select the candidates to be inducted. The National Honor Society does not operate on a quota system, all students whom the Faculty Council finds to uphold the ideals of the National Honor Society and who complete the requirements for membership will be invited to join the organization.

  7. Receive communication of acceptance or denial of admission into National Honor Society and pay dues.

    • The fee is $5.00 and is due once the candidate has been accepted for induction into NHS. Candidates will be notified of acceptance in April. More details for paying dues will be made available then.

    • Dues must be received by the deadline communicated in April to ensure candidates are accepted into NHS.

  1. Attend NHS induction ceremony (if possible).

    • Students must be formally inducted in order to become National Honor Society Members.

    • Membership in the Jasper National Honor Society will be transferred to Plano West Senior High after students leave Jasper.

    • Students who attend other schools outside of Plano will also have their membership transferred. To do this, please email one of your sponsors with the name and email address of your new school's NHS sponsor.
