Candidate Requirements

Leadership:

National Honor Society candidates are leaders both in and out of the classroom. NHS candidates should demonstrate qualities of leadership on a daily basis by setting an example for other Jasper students, participating in and assuming leadership roles within extra-curricular activities and organizations, and identifying needs within the school and community at large and how to meet them through service.

If a candidate has ideas for a service project of which he or she would like to be in charge, please see one of the sponsors.

Candidates also have the opportunities to demonstrate leadership by applying to serve as a NHS officer. Interested candidates may attend the officer informational meeting. The time will be announced in the NHS google classroom.

Scholarship:

Candidates must maintain a grade point average of 3.6 or higher to remain eligible for membership in NHS. At the end of the fall semester, any candidate whose cumulative GPA (as provided by the registrar) is below 3.6 will no longer be eligible for membership. This number is set and cannot be rounded up.

Service:

National Honor Society candidates are required to perform a minimum of 12 hours of service per semester to be eligible for membership. All service hours must be recorded on a form available from an adviser. Service hours must be verified by the signature of an adult who sponsored or worked directly with the student.

Six service hours per semester may be fulfilled within Jasper High School through volunteering with a teacher or organization in which volunteer work is not required. A minimum of six hours per semester are to be fulfilled outside of JHS - rather, within the community.

Service hours may be earned for voluntary service in the school or the community with some few exceptions.

Ineligible Community Service Activities

    • Volunteer work completed prior to the first day of the academic school year unless it is an approved Jasper-related event.

    • Service for organizations that are not non-profit, or clearly resume-boosting OR are not accepted by Plano West.

    • Fundraising activities for organizations other than National Honor Society. (ex. Working at a car wash to raise money for the band.)

    • Activities required for another class or organization or activities in which the student benefits in another class or organization. (ex. Required participation in a Saturday or orientation, receiving extra credit for a class, receiving recognition for another organization.)

    • Chores or extra work at the home of an individual. (ex. Babysitting, mowing the lawn at home without getting paid.)

    • Assisting at a business or for-profit organization.

    • Tutoring classmates.

The approved organizations list is posted in our NHS google classroom.

We will be offering several Jasper NHS-specific service opportunities through our JNHS Google Classroom.

Character:

National Honor Society members and candidates should strive to embody traits such as honesty, tolerance, integrity, school spirit, success within the rules, respect for others and perseverance.

The Jasper High School faculty considers character to be an integral factor in selecting students for National Honor Society. During the year, candidates should make every effort to demonstrate character traits that let those around them know that they are a person worthy of admission to an honor society.
