q&A

Commonly asked questions

Any questions not answered here can be directed to our coaches. Thank you!

Is lacrosse a cut sport?

Yes! Lacrosse is a cut sport, at this point we do not have enough spots to allow everyone who is interested to play but we do want to meet everyone who is interested in trying out!

Is there a frosh/soph team?

No. Currently, NHS does not have a frosh/soph team and we currently do not have other frosh/soph teams in our league. Maybe in the future!

Can a freshman make varsity?

Yes! New players are not required to stay on JV. There are many factors that go into making JV and Varsity such as lax IQ, stick skills, and athleticism.

Is there a lot of running?

YES! If you don't like running, this isn't the sport for you.

Can I pick up my child from their away game?

NO! Your child must ride the bus to and from an away game. We (NHS + Coaching staff) are liable for the safety of your child as they travel to and from an away game. In an event of an emergency/urgent situation, we will allow parents to pickup their child. The parent must email coaching staff why they are picking up and then meet the coach at the campus (we must see you!). These procedures are to keep your kids safe!

I'm interested in trying out but I've never played, do I have a chance of getting a spot?

Yes! We have many girls who tryout that have never played before. We strongly encourage anyone who is interested to begin practicing their stick skills and lax IQ. We would recommend also watching lacrosse related Youtube videos to begin familiarizing yourself with vocabulary and the intensity of the sport. Getting into shape is another recommendation prior to attending tryouts.

Where can I buy lacrosse gear?

Dick's Sporting Goods has some good gear but the employees don't always know much and could recommend you sticks and other equipment that isn't good EVEN WORSE! They could give you boys lacrosse equipment!!! Beware!!!! Instead, go to Monkey Sports! Located near the Tustin District: 1962 Barranca Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92606. Can't go in person? Click Here to go on the website. It is always better to buy the equipment in person, at Monkey Sports, the employees are much more educated on lacrosse.

Can I borrow a lacrosse stick from the coaches?

We have an extremely limited amount of sticks. We have a couple, but it is important a player purchase their own stick so they get used to it and customize it to suit themselves.

I want to be a goalie!

We are always in need of one! Talk to the coaches to show your interest early on, we will work with you to get your gear.

When is season?

In the spring. First game is scheduled in February.

How does attendance work?

All players must attend practice unless they have a family emergency or medical appointment. Lacrosse practice is a class thus skipping results in an unexcused absence. The attendance office will mark your excused absence if it meets the criteria. Players are expected to give the coaches a heads up as to why they won't be attending. Unexcused absences will affect playtime in games.

Is there a tardy policy?

Yes. Communicate with your coaches why you will be late. Tardies will result in consequences. Arrive on time so you can practice and warm up with your team.

I made the team but lacrosse is not on my schedule!

Since tryouts are typically in the fall, you already have a set schedule. Lacrosse will be added officially on your spring schedule. If not enrolled in off-season, you can also still join us. if you have a 7/8th period in the fall, your schedule will change in the spring to accommodate lacrosse.

I'm having scheduling issues with lacrosse and all my other classes, what do I do?

contact your counselor! They will assist you with scheduling needs.

What happens if I can't make it to a game?

games are mandatory. If you cannot come to a game you must speak to your coaches. Family emergencies can excuse a game day absence otherwise players are required to stay for games and for the entire duration of the game.

Does a bus take us to the tournament in Pasadena?

Unfortunately, no. Please communicate with parents and figure out a carpooling system. Coaches are not allowed to take players either.

How can I get more playtime in games?

Practice Practice Practice! Practice makes better! There are many amazing resources on youtube, instagram, and even tiktok! Contact your comp group members and see who is free to practice with. Not every player needs to be on a club team. Always put in work outside of scheduled practices!

Is summer camp mandatory for returners?

No! We encourage you come though! We highly advise that players who want to try out for the team enroll in summer camp so they can get the fundamentals down.
