In April 2020, during the initial COVID shutdowns across the U.S., Michele VanDyke was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer. Her treatment began promptly, involving eight rounds of chemotherapy over 16 weeks, which were administered every other week throughout the difficult conditions of the pandemic. In September 2020, Michele underwent a mastectomy, followed by 25 rounds of radiation therapy. Her husband, Gary, was a constant presence, supporting her through nearly every appointment and procedure.
Throughout this process, Michele faced significant and persistent physical challenges. While she is currently on a regimen of important medications to manage her health, she has not yet received a final diagnosis confirming she is completely cancer-free.
The creation of these leagues stems from reasons that extend beyond Gary’s personal experience. Having witnessed the long-term effects of treatment firsthand, he has seen that while medical intervention can be life-saving, recovery is rarely a straightforward path. Many survivors navigate ongoing health complications that are not always visible. Michele’s own experience—including chronic pain, severe migraines, and a life-threatening heart condition requiring a surgically inserted defibrillator—has highlighted the reality that the journey often continues long after active treatment ends. By sharing their story, the intent is to foster a deeper understanding that survivorship often involves a complex, ongoing adjustment to life.
Gary launched the original Michele Breast Cancer Classic in 2022 to reflect on their shared experience and to support those currently facing similar hardships. While Michele embraces every day with resilience, the initiative acknowledges that survival should not come at the cost of a diminished quality of life. The goal in organizing these events is not only to provide an engaging experience for the community but also to raise awareness for the fact that cancer’s impact persists long after treatment concludes. Gary is grateful for the community's participation and for their willingness to stand with those who are still working toward a brighter, healthier future.
