Preparing for the Future (from Washington University in St. Louis)

It is never too early to begin preparing for college. In fact, the choices you make now will play a role in your future success. You already realize that your curriculum in high school will have an impact on your college applications. There are also things other than studying that you can do now to set yourself up on the road to success.

The following are suggestions for preparing for college and for Life. The most important thing to remember is that your high school years are filled with opportunities. Make them out of your time and enjoy the journey.

• Challenge yourself. Take advanced or honors courses if they are offered. Study a foreign language, advanced math or science, or humanities.
• Explore. Use the electives you take as a way to uncover possible special interests or careers.
• Volunteer. Community service helps everyone - including you. Your volunteer service can be a way to find out what you are good at and what you enjoy.
• Get involved. Join a club or, better yet, leave a club. Play a sport or an instrument.
• Set goals. Decide what you want out of life and set a plan to achieve your goals. Share your goals with friends, parents, counselors, and teachers. Their help and support will be invaluable throughout your high school years.
• Know yourself. Think about what is important to you.
