We are happy to share this schedule of the upcoming edition of NextDoors 2025. NextDoors is an interdisciplinary project week at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp that takes place between 24-28 February 2025. During this week, various activities will take place in an open and adventurous environment.
During this lesson-free week, we want to turn the building into an experimental playground.

You can sign up for an activity via the button on the right. Be on time, some projects work with a limited number of participants.

In this project, we will dive into femininity and horror. How do we bring the two together? When so many horror films give us a misogynistic image, sexualizing female angst? We will look for how to turn horror into movement. How we can turn horror into sound or even music. We will start from the stereotype of “feminine gentleness” and continue until we arrive at a kind of “feminine rage.” In what theater texts or dance pieces do these already appear? During this week, we will explore our own limits. We will watch movies, read texts, listen to music and improvise. How do we make ourselves into horror?

The moving costume: body as a playground

This workshop derives from the costume-led methodology I developed in 2016, and it has been applied to my own practice, and to Dance and Costume students in Antwerp and Portugal. ‘The moving costume: body as a playground’ perceives body and materials as agencies with sensorial capacities, by proposing an embodied practice to create costume from the relation with the body. Starting from the perception of costume as a body intervention, it uses visual qualities as guidelines to experiment shapes, materials, sounds, and tastes through a relational and sensorial approach with the bodies (human and non-human). By re-using and re-signifying found and collected materials, it supports costume-led practice as a choreographic tool, furthermore, it disseminates a more sustainable practice in sensing(other) agencies involved in the ecosystem of artistic processes.

In Next Doors, I invite Dance and Costume students to work together during this 5-day workshop, creating also a space for future collaborations. We have only 20 places for the workshop, we will send out an open call with more information. This workshop is part of my PhD research Corpo-Gambiarra: Dance, Costume and Politics of the body.

This lab is part of my master's research focused on exploring methodologies that promote equity in the collaboration between dance and music, as well as among dancers and musicians during both the creative process and performances.

During this week, I aim to create a safe space for exploration in the following areas:

Research Power Dynamics:
Investigating aggression, oppression yet also care and safety and how they are expressed through body and sound.

Methodologies for Role Shifts:
Developing models to redistribute power dynamics in interactions between dancers and musicians in creative work on the floor.

Translation of Concepts:
Examining how terminology specific to each art form can enhance understanding and enrichment. For example, how does the concept of dissonance translate into dance, and how can the idea of embodiment be applied to music-making?

Fostering Care and Equity:
Brainstorm, implement and reflect on ways dancers and musicians can cultivate a more equitable and cross pollinative process.

Through these explorations and brainstorming, I hope to facilitate a deeper understanding of the collaborative relationship between dance and music, ultimately leading to more equitable practices in the arts and new methods of interacting.

Dancing in the Dark: A Survival Kit for the End of Light

What becomes of performance when no one is watching? What does it mean to embody presence in the unseen and what kind of dance exists when it’s free from the gaze?

In the enveloping space of darkness, we will engage with rigorous dance research and carefully crafted scores, discovering how disappearance can become generative. As vision fades, new possibilities for spatial awareness, and creative expression open up. Darkness becomes a site for transformation—where movement emerges from what is unseen and fleeting.

This workshop invites dancers, performance-makers, and movers to explore the delicate balance between skill and sensitivity, and to reconsider the traditional role of performing the self in contemporary performance. Performers are often asked to express and present their personal identity, personality, and internal world as central to the act of performance, yet how can we create spaces where performance is not an exhibition of the self, but an invitation to refocus vision?

By obstructing or reducing sight, we offer a “new” vision—one that is more intense, more focused, and less preoccupied with appearances. This shift does not dissolve the self into a collective experience, but instead invites a deeper awareness of the unseen, of the layers and depths that lie beneath the surface. Here, we will explore how this focused vision can transform the act of performance, making it less about the external projection of self and more about engaging with the subtleties that reside in absence, in the dark.

This workshop invites you to explore the materialities of darkness through precise and deliberate movement practices. Each morning begins with an adapted ballet barre to anchor the body in clarity and focus.

Live Coding: Expanding Creative Horizons in Performance Art

In the cutting-edge world of contemporary artistic expression, live coding emerges as a revolutionary approach that blends technology, improvisation, and real-time creativity. This innovative workshop invites conservatoire students to explore the dynamic intersection of programming and performance, breaking down traditional boundaries between composition, interpretation, and technological innovation.

Participants will discover how lines of code can become instruments of artistic expression, transforming programming into a live, spontaneous creative process. The workshop covers multiple domains of artistic generation: musical composition and visuals. Students will learn to write and modify code in real-time, creating evolving soundscapes, generative visual environments.

Using specialized programming languages and open source platforms designed for live performance, students will develop skills in algorithmic composition and interactive design. They'll experiment with creating music that responds to mathematical patterns, generating graphics that pulse and transform with coded instructions, that emerge from computational logic.

This immersive experience challenges traditional notions of creativity, offering students a unique opportunity to expand their artistic toolkit and explore the profound connections between technology, code, and artistic expression.

We are delighted to organize a three-day workshop on the Indonesian gamelan ensemble. Bronze gongs and other metallophones are the most characteristic instruments of a traditional gamelan ensemble. In addition to these, the ensemble includes other instruments such as a double-skin drum, a fiddle, and a flute. Gamelan ensembles vary by region and are performed in occasions and ceremonies, such as, wedding feasts, births, cremations, and purifications.

Our teacher, Balinese musician Krishna Sutedja, is a master degree graduate of the Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam, specializing in gamelan and electronic music. He composes and teaches Balinese gamelan music to several groups across Europe, promoting Indonesian performing arts and culture while broadening his musical horizons. Eka, a traditional Indonesian dancer will perform at the concert.
The workshop and concert are supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Belgium. The workshop is open to musicians of all instruments (including vocalists), cultural background and artistic interests. Prior experience in world music or percussion is not required. Please indicate whether you are fully committed to participating in the concert on Wednesday afternoon.

The jester historically has been always considered a storyteller who always knows it belongs to the performative space. In a world saturated with narratives and identities, the jester's role takes on new significance, getting out of such dualisms of gender and representation. Also, if we look in psycho magics the figure of the Jester or The Fool in classic Tarot represents the future and the unknown.

How will look alike a deconstructed jester belonging to all the narratives that we consume now a days? How it would be a body that constantly seeks for their own story to tell without having to be supressed to just a singular identity? How can we rebuild and reshape narratives, characters and identities through movement research? These are some of the questions that this workshop looks to investigate.

The workshop will be focused in the experimentation of performativity, improvisation and character building through movement. linked with concepts such as The Other, the Uncanny or the Cringe using the transposition of digital tools into reality.

A trio of saxophone, flute and piano experiment by interweaving poetry and music together. We will create a long overarching story using these different forms of art whilst blending our cultures together. There will be an experimentation between each interdisciplinary element through a pseudo-improvisation in order to create a holistic piece.

The possibilities of a Creative Orchestra: Exploring George Lewis' "Creative Construction Set"

In this workshop we will explore the vast creative possibilities of George E. Lewis’ Creative Construction Set (CCS): “a mobile, situational-form work in which performers create and explore a relational sociosonic environment via improvisation and indeterminacy.” Coming out of a long tradition of African American experimental music practices (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) Lewis’ work invites performers to improvise in the context of a large ensemble, in this case by executing instructions from a set of cards. We will experiment with the different possibilities of Lewis’ CCS through playing, but also through reflection by discussing the musical results and our experiences of playing it. We will address questions about collective and individual agency, hierarchy and determinism in the context of an improvised performance with a large group of musicians. As Lewis suggests:

“Since this is a situational and relational work with many generative possibilities, it is important to consider the past, present, and potential futures of the sonic environment when making decisions on what to play. As with all improvisations, including our everyday-life human efforts, the success of a given performance of this work will be less a question of individual freedom than of the assumption of personal responsibility for the sonic environment. When performed well, CCS becomes a meditative evocation of weather.”

This workshop invites the participants to improvise while I manipulate their sound through my computer. The particularity of this setup being that we share the control over the hybrid instrument we create. The improvising musician doesn’t have full control over his/her instrument anymore and I can’t create sound autonomously.

Between our improvisations, we will reflect collectively on the interaction that occurs between improvising musicians and their ‘digital double’. We will also discuss what it tells us about collaborative improvisation and how it can inspire our conception of sound and melody. Make sure to bring your instruments!

Starting with yoga and breathing exercises as a warm-up, we prepare our bodies to explore together on the floor how to create a dialogue. I think it would be nice to have dancers, actors & musicians explore together how to create a coming together. As a setup, after the warm-up, I would ask the musicians to develop an improvisatory interplay on which the dancers and actors can move forward. I would provide a microphone where the students can read in pieces of text that fit what is happening on the floor. Or free expressions that arise in the moment are given space to exist.

Students from different disciplines may also choose to inteleven themselves in different roles, with the musicians' permission to use their instruments, of course.

A moment of discovery together and playfully meeting each other by merging our qualities.

The Convergence Start-up is a workshop/lecture about the possibilities of new technologies and digital strategies in interdisciplinary artistic practices. This year, we are collaborating with the artist collective Screen Dive. Over three days, we will learn about how to make interactive installations, think in an interdisciplinary way, and implement new technology and algorithms in the creative process. At the end of the workshops, participants will have the option to start-up their own collaborative interdisciplinary project that can be supported by the Convergence Team and presented during the Convergence seminar. The seminar will take place between 10- 11 March, at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.

Four-day interdisciplinary research class by Karel Tuytschaever. As a maker and teaching artist, Karel is mesmerised by physicality and embodiment in the arts. Corporeality in the context of the relationship a person has with their own body. Embodiment; how, as an artist, you use your own body to be part of, or come to the creation of a work. ‘I started creating my own work because as an actor/performer, I am often nothing more than a projection, a canvas in someone else's plot or narrative imagination. From the embodied knowledge of what it can be like to exist in an image, I came to deepen my method of working as a maker.’ In this research class, master students of dance (KCA) and visual arts (KAA) are invited to share together their interest in the theme of Embodiment in 2D image. The focus of the workshop is on encounter, connection and practical exploration of the disciplines. The research class includes practical exercises, method sharing and dialogue.

What could Gender Studies possibly tell us about the relationship between Musical Analysis and Performance?

In this workshop, bring your inventive musical selves! We explore how gender studies challenge us to rethink unspoken rules of our musical practice, focusing on the relationship between analyses and performance. Theories of gender often emphasise how we, as embodied performers, act together to bring music into being, thus encouraging us to find personal and experimental ways of reacting to analysis in performance.

We start with an analysis of R. Schumann’s ‘Du Ring an meinem Finger’. We discuss how gender might be reflected in the music, using analysis to tease out ideas.

In the second part of the workshop, we experiment with our instruments, to try and find ways of playing the melody that take different perspectives on these gendered subtexts.

Finally we look at some analysed examples of repertoire by female composers from the 19th century, such as Josephine Lang, Fanny Hensel and Cecile Chaminade. You’ll have the chance to experiment with these excerpts on your own, using what you have discovered in part one and two to try to find interesting new ways of playing the music.

This workshop invites students without improvisation experience to improvise freely while I manipulate their sound through my computer. I believe this particular setup where we share control of the ‘hybrid’ instrument we create can help any musician to find freedom while they improvise. The loss of full control over one’s instrument takes us away from our usual concerns of quality control, leading to unexpectedly liberating results. Between our improvisations, we will reflect collectively on the interaction that occurs between an improvising musician and their ‘digital double’ and how this process can inspire our conception of sound.

Touch is the first sense we get to experience in life. It is the sense which is fundamental for our contact with the world. In the last couple of years, we have found ourselves living amidst the times of abstract distance and sensory impoverishment. Beyond Gaze investigates touch as an artistic medium and proposes that when combined creatively, touch-led strategies and dramatic inquiry methods hold a great potential in joining differences productively, empower individuals of different abilities to learn from one another through a shared sense modality.

As the first part of the presentations series the project is bringing together, Beyond Gaze invites Vera Tussing to revisit her works 'The Palm of Your Hand #2' and 'Un-staging Tactility'. We will be discussing touch-led strategies that she uses in her creative processes and installations that are driven by her interests in dance, movement, perception, the senses, embodied experience, multisensorial spectatorship, collectivity and consent.

The Quantum Choir

This workshop will kickstart a new interdisciplinary ensemble, the likes of which the Conservatoire – arguably, the world – has never heard before. The Quantum Choir is a nomadic mixed choir working like a metal band. It will consist of people who sing, shout, whisper, and play anything that you can hit or blow. It will be dedicated to dissecting folk songs and ancient texts – liturgical and profane – in Spanish, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Proto-Semitic (!) and more. We will perform and learn from a unique repertoire, ranging between deconstruction, extreme interpretation, and composition. You can choose to participate as a performer, arranger, composer, or a combination of those. If you’re curious about Middle Eastern ornamentation, the use of overtones in group singing, the sonic spell of languages, and heavy music – you should probably join this!

The ensemble will be directed and led by Tomer Damsky (for first impressions go here: www.tomerdamsky.com ). After the session in NextDoors, there is the possibility to present a short act at the opening concert of Convergence seminar on 9 March. Suitable participants can continue working with Tomer and the choir to develop a full concert, as part of an ongoing project in the Creatie research group.

The villain enters the theatrical space. Even with their eyes closed, the audience senses the impending danger. Strings, horns, organ—minor, dissonant—what makes music feel rogue? In this workshop, participants will examine the compositional techniques that portray villains and will compose their own villainous pieces based on literary scene descriptions, film clips, and model scores.

My two-year research project, How the Villain Became a Good Example, deconstructs the villain archetype. Compared to visual art, literature, or film, music seems to have the least potential to evoke associations with the coldness of ""evil."" Yet, there’s no doubt when a villain enters. Through the imaginary musical worlds created by musicians and composers, I aim to expand my own field of research—drama—and to adapt a new perspective on villains and their representations.

In this workshop we will unravel the connection between performative writing and embodied creative practice. With a background in dance, I intend for us to use our body as the starting point and to apply our physical knowledge to text. We will wake up the senses and explore practical tools (which includes improvisation) to enhance different approaches to writing. Additionally, if time allows us, I would eventually guide you through developing your own short performative writing. Regardless, we will research this crossover to enable to critically reflect and incorporate an embodied approach to future performative projects.

This workshop is open to specifically dance and drama students, and of course musicians if this subject is of interest. It would be great to bring along a text you love to the workshop. It can be written by you or another author, does not really matter. Also please bring a pen, notebook and comfortable clothes to move in. I look forward to seeing you there.

Workshop Moor Mother

Meeting with poet/musician Moor Mother.This workshop consists of a discussion on interdisciplinarity, activism and other themes within Moor Mother's work, followed by a free jam.Open to anyone working with music and words.

Camae Ayewa, better known by her pseudonym Moor Mother, is a versatile and irrepressible artist, poet and musician. Collaborations are an essential part of her artistry: whether with her free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements, as Moor Mother, in projects with artists such as American (sound) artist, musician and teacher Lonnie Holley, or within the interdisciplinary art collective Black Quantum Futurism (Camae Ayewa & Rasheedah Phillips). With this collective, she explores the intersections between futurism, creative media, DIY aesthetics and activism in marginalised communities through an alternative lens, rooted in writing, performance, music, film, visual art and research.

Camae's unmistakable voice and stage presence - through which she spreads her message through spoken word, rap and poetry - is surrounded by musical improvisation and electronic music. Her performances are profound and urgent, a reflection on current issues such as social pressures and political injustice. Her words are raw and direct, a voice indispensable today in times of generational shifts.

Calling Songs

With Calling Songs, I investigate whether and how insect and amphibian choirs can be integrated into concert practice. For this, in collaboration with Pieter Verhees and the musicians of Zwerm, I have built a sound installation that can be set up at outdoor locations. The installation consists of eight speakers that are adapted to the landscape and that can project their sound 360° over the site.

The instrumentation consists of modular synthesizers and effects pedals. The sound of the location (frogs, toads, insects, wind, sea, birds) forms the musical starting point. The task for the human players is to look for mixed sounds with which we can pull what we normally call natural or ambient sound into the musical domain.

In the lecture performance for Next Doors, I will talk about the course of my research, the practical experiences I have gained so far and I will demonstrate part of the installation (four speakers and one player). Since the activity is indoors, there are no animal populations involved. With a short closing concert, I hope to be able to convey something of the sound world we are looking for in this research.

OnTouch is an immersive sensorial workshop. The space will be transformed into a playground intended to enhance the sense of touch of those who decide to take part. Every-body will be invited to actively pursue their own exploration of touch in space, using it as the main sense to perceive the surroundings and to interact with the other participants. Objects and specific smells will be part of the space in which participants will move.

DISCLAIMER: OnTouch will be a workshop entirely based on the stimulation of the sense of touch. People who will decide TO IMMERSE themselves in the experience MUST BE comfortable with giving and receiving touch. Guidelines will be given before the performance on how to share touch. People who decide TO NOT IMMERSE themselves in the experience are still invited to join as Eyewitnesses; their senses will be stimulated from a long distance.

In his Echo Room, composer Karel Stulens invites you into a world where everything is repeatable. Every sound is absorbed and spat out in another form, disappearing onto a ribbon of tape and suddenly reverberating back into the room. Voices mix with other repeating sounds. Sometimes distorted and grim, at other times it blending beautifully together with other voices like a magnificent choir.

In this workshop, Karel will introduce you to the possiblities of the tape recorder, and together, you will use it as a tool for composing and playing with sound.

This workshop is open to everyone working with sound, instruments, voice, both sung and spoken.

Qafila. A musical journey towards the East (CEP - not open for applications)

Qafila is a nomadic, light-format performance with one singer, one narrator and three musicians (oud, ney, percussions – acoustic concert). The audience is taken on an imaginary travel from Turkey to India, following the former “Silk-Road” trails, through traditional songs, story-telling and participatory moments. Performers and public are traveling together from one oasis to another, between “countries”, accompanied by the narrator/caravaneer. The musical blend is an invitation to cross mental and geographic borders, making new connections between oriental musical traditions and the western repertoire. It can be performed either across a large building or in quiet outdoors if weather allows (forest, public parc), for groups of appr. 30 people, aged from 7 to 107.

During the residency week in Antwerp, the artistic team will be focusing on the staging of the show and develop the story-telling moments in a collective, co-creative process. We may propose a public presentation of the achieved work at the end of the week.

Mijn creatief project Saïdjah en Adinda is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige verhaal van Multatuli uit het boek Max Havelaar. Voor het project zijn we momenteel aan het werken aan de muziek en het script. Zowel muzikaal als visueel loopt de performance over van westerse en oosterse elementen, zoals Gamelan-muziek en Wayang-theater. De composities die aan bod komen zijn geïnspireerd door traditionele Indonesische muziek, alsook door Nederlandse en andere Europese werken. De gesproken teksten komen uit Multatuli's werk Max Havelaar of zijn origineel gecreëerd voor deze voorstelling.

Om al die elementen samen te krijgen (muziek, woord, dans) hebben we best wat (experimentele) oefentijd nodig. Daarom zou ik graag de NextDoors week gebruiken om dit waar te maken.

Ik ben samen met Adilia Yip ook aan het bekijken hoe we een Gamelan Workshop kunnen laten gebeuren in het conservatorium. Zij heeft hiervoor ook een aanvraag gedaan voor de NextDoors week. Die workshop is voortgevloeid uit mijn project, maar heeft hier niet noodzakelijk iets mee te maken.

Mijn project overbrugt compositie, piano, zang, percussie en dans.

On Friday, January 12, 2007, Joshua Bell began to play on his three-and-a-half-million dollar Stradivarius in a Washington D.C. metro station during rush hour: nobody stopped to listen to him. How much of a hurry must people have been in to not slow down in front of such beauty? In a performance featuring works of contemporary composers written for flute quartet, the NLF quartet will take the audience into a psychological and sensorial experience, questioning the role in art of the frame and attention.

In the sessions on February 24th and 25th, we will concentrate on developing the musical material for the performance of MIDSUMMER WHISPERS on May 16th.

While the ""skeleton"" of the pieces is already in place, we will work on creating melodies for the additional instruments and rehearse the existing material.
