Residencies & Cultural Exchange

Time to write, research and encounter another place.

Some residencies support a screenplay; others offer space for artistic exploration or exchange. Check the purpose, length of stay and costs before choosing. A residency place does not necessarily include travel or a stipend.

Official sources checked 8 November 2026. These profiles distinguish writing residencies, self-directed stays and cultural-exchange fellowships. Application fees and next-call deadlines/time zones are unverified unless stated.

Screenwriting

Organiser: Festival de Cannes / Cinéma de Demain · Paris · First or second fiction feature

A four-and-a-half-month screenwriting residence for young non-French filmmakers. Previous short films or a first feature must meet the programme’s festival-selection requirements. The March–July 2027 session closed applications on 30 September 2026; next-session dates are not confirmed here. Read the official regulations for accommodation, grant, language and application conditions.

Artistic practice and community

Organiser: Studio 88 · Doi Saket, Chiang Mai, Thailand · Cross-disciplinary

Welcomes artists, writers and creative thinkers, including new-media and cross-disciplinary practices. Self-directed stays accept rolling applications for two weeks to three months; themed calls have their own schedules. Support includes workspace and introductions to the local creative context. Confirm the residency rate, included facilities and any sponsored-place terms: not every place is funded. Filmmakers should ask whether their technical needs can be met.

Cultural exchange fellowships

Organiser: Asian Cultural Council · Six months · Cultural exchange

For eligible Asia-based citizens or permanent residents, including Malaysians, aged 21 or above. Supports learning and immersion in the United States, rather than producing a film. The 2027 cycle offers January–June or July–December 2028 cohorts. US$38,000 includes travel-related support; housing, insurance and other specified costs are deducted. Work, study and visa conditions apply. Read the full guidelines before planning a stay.

Organiser: Asian Cultural Council · One to six months · Research and exchange

For eligible artists, scholars and arts professionals pursuing cultural immersion or self-directed research in a new environment. Supports individuals or qualifying small joint applications, up to US$35,000. It is an exchange fellowship, not a film-production grant.

ACC 2027 cycle: applications close 10 November 2026 at 09:59 US Eastern (22:59 MYT); recommendation letters close 16 November at the same time. Application fee not verified. Only one programme per cycle; use the current official guidelines.
