Fall 2025 | 8 Student Authors | Published February 23, 2026 |
Fall 2025 brings together a diverse collection of scholarship under an umbrella of constructed power, identity, and meaning. From the deliberate violence of Stalinist famine policy to the performative labour of professional wrestling, from the shifting myths of Roman origins to the creation of queer political space in western Canada, these papers reveal that authority is never fixed and identity is never neutral. We are proud to present these works that remind us that history is not only what happened, but how people made sense of what, and how those interpretations continue to structure our world. We are beyond delighted to showcase these papers as part of the Fall 2025 edition of News Blast from the Past!
"It’s Still Real To Me, Damn It!”: Marx, Macho Man, and The Catharsis Provided By the Violent Labour of Professional Wrestlers - Benjamin Chartier
Under Watchful Eyes: Courting and Social Surveillance in Early 19th Century Canada - Emily Connellan
Meleager, the Thracian that Founded the Roman People: A Study of the Shifting Narrative of Myths - Alex Hamman
The Pitiful Geniuses of the Principality of Antioch: An Analysis of Antiochene Survival through Politics, Military, and Diplomacy - Theo Houston
Creation of Mikadoism in the Modern State: Renegotiating Shinto and Religion in the Transition to Modernity - Robert Leslie
Humanism and Existentialism in Calvin and Hobbes: Meaning, Reasoning, and Curiosity Without Religion - Zach Palardy

On behalf of the committee, we want to say thank you to everyone who had a hand in making
this edition possible. To our fellow students, we were just super excited to see the number of
submissions grow over each semester. We are nothing but thankful for you allowing us to review,
edit, and put out your work for others to see and be used as examples. We are humbled to be the
outlet to showcase this work. A special thanks to the team that have taken on this task to read and
review the work. The time and effort you volunteered helps ensure that we highlight quality
work. The commitment to this project will never go unacknowledged as truly we could not do
this without you.
To the readers, we thank you for engaging in this collection and the work both your fellow
students and editing team. As always, we hope that this collection is used as examples of the
quality of work that comes out of the faculty and helps inspire others to continue researching and
writing to further enrich the study of History and Religious Studies.
