Hello there, I'm on Windows Server 2019 1809. Since Monday I'm trying to get rid of the News and interests taskbar widget (sometimes it's flickering and is just annoying). I installed admx templates that include feeds.admx. Created a GPO "Enable news and interests on the taskbar - Disabled", but nothing happens. it's still there. Any ideas? Or am I just missing the point of the policy?

I am running Server 2016 standard version 10.0.14393 running as primary DC. 32 PCs in my computer lab all on win10 21H1. i am trying to disable the news and interests feed (this is a small PC lab for students so it is a distraction). I have downloaded and installed the 05/2021 Administrative template into C:\windows\policydefinitions (it shows the feeds.admx file). when navigating to "computer configuration - policies - administrative templates - windows components" news and interests is not present to disable. (it DOES indicate it is being pulled from the central store). Also, other GPOs within the OU are coming back successful (no command prompt, various desktop shortcuts, etc...) any ideas on the next step to get this to work as intended?

This no longer seems to work in Windows 11. There is another option to disable the Widget but it only hides the icon. It still runs in the background. More info here -windows-11-disable-news-and-interests

There was some good news in that announcement: There is now a Group Policy for turning this off at the machine level, at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests > Enable news and interests on the taskbar.

The Widgets seem useful, for example there is Weather, To Do, Microsoft 365, Outlook Calendar, etc. that could be useful at work. So, is there a way to keep the icon and Widgets but get rid of the news and interests through group policy? I do have the Win 11 admx templates from October installed.

Users can also customize how the newsfeed appears on the taskbar. By default, the weather conditions icon and temperature are shown. By right clicking on the icon, users can modify this in the context menu as shown below.

You must then create a computer side policy by going to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests > Enable news and interests on the taskbar. You can then choose to enable or disable the feature. Enabling the policy will allow News and interests on the taskbar and give users access to the applicable context menu. This will give users the ability to turn it off if they wish. The policy is enabled in the screenshot below.

To disable News and Interests in the Active Directory environment you can use Group Policy: Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and interests > Enable news and interests on the taskbar >>> Disabled.

Outlook calendars and tasks can now be displayed so that the widgets can have a certain benefit in the work environment. However, mostly low-quality MSN news and advertisements still dominate the appearance of this feature. The photos from OneDrive that are displayed by default are not usually needed on a workplace PC, either.

If you keep the administrative templates in a central store and still use ADMX for Windows 10, you will search in vain for this setting. It requires the templates for Windows 11, which are not fully backwards compatible with Windows 10.Subscribe to 4sysops newsletter!

We are using Windows 10 Enterprise with the latest patch level. The GPO "Enable news and interests on the taskbar" has been set to "Disabled" for ages (the relevant policy was last adjusted around March 2022).

There are different methods that one can use to disable the news and interests in Windows 10. The News and Interests features can be turned off using the Taskbar options, Group Policy, and the Registry. You can also disable news and interests using Intune.

On the right pane, double-click on the Enable news and interests on the taskbar policy. This policy setting specifies whether news and interests is allowed on the device. Select Disabled to turn off News and Interests feature. Click Apply and OK.

In Windows 10, there are three different ways to disable news and interests from the taskbar. The News and Interests features can be turned off using the Taskbar options, Group Policy, and the Registry.

This feature is so poorly implemented. It shows me the weather at a glance which is useful, then I click it and it shows me news articles about people being murdered. How the hell did this get approved in its current state?

When these argon isotopes decay, they produce small energy deposits inside the ICARUS detector. The deposits' energies are of order 100 times smaller than the neutrino interactions ICARUS studies and are ignored in the ICARUS detector. However, those same low-energy deposits would be bad news for DarkSide-50 since they look too much like potential WIMP interactions, which could trick scientists into crying, "WIMP!" e24fc04721
