Micro-Credentialing

INTRODUCTION

Definition: a digital badge is a way of representing an accomplishment. More formally, a digital badge represents a judgement by an organization or individual regarding a person's experiences, abilities and knowledge of qualifications.

      • Name -- badge's name should be clear to the student.
      • Scope -- Is this badge something a student could earn during a unit of study? After a full course?
      • Requirements -- to earn this badge, the student may need to complete a certain number of assignments, log some hours, demonstrate a skill, or do all of the above.
      • Criteria -- what determines if the student actually earns the badge.1

Digital badges provide shortcuts to understanding the competencies and achievements of the people we’re teaching, recruiting, and collaborating with online. In our dynamic society, the stakes are high for students to demonstrate relevant competencies, and for institutions to demonstrate the competency-based value of their curriculum. EQUITY

Why? Students will be presented with a wide range of learning opportunities as they move through secondary education.

These flexible pathways may include online learning, mastery assessments, and certification programs.

Building the skills so that all students have the opportunity to engage and master these flexible pathways will build a more equitable learning environment (technology education).
