In Scotland's East Ayrshire, the settlement of Newmilns is part of the burgh of Newmilns and Greenholm. It is located about 25 miles southwest of Glasgow and about 7 miles east of Kilmarnock. It has a population of about 3,000 people and has a fantastic local action group, the Newmilns Regeneration Association, https://www.lovenewmilns.org.
There are eight specific industrial energy consumers located in the industrial district highlighted in red in the below picture. These industrial consumers will be the focus of the case study presented in this website. It is a primary goal of the Newmilns Regeneration Association to not only secure the future of local industry but to regenerate the derelict ironworks (large building at bottom right of below picture). The cost of this redevelopment is a primary factor on the economic viability of any proposed renewable energy installation.

Establish Baseline demand
Evaluate scope for demand reduction
Evaluate renewable resources in local area
Specify appropriate plant/strategy to meet Key Performance Objectives
Minimise cost of energy for local Industry
Maximise the proportion of demand met by local renewable generation
Minimise system complexity and capital cost
Contribute to the regeneration of derelict industrial buildings
There is little point in generation if the demand for energy has not been evaluated
Wind and solar availability is investigated to optimise a hybrid system to meet the industry demand and generate revenue.
The river Irvine runs through the centre of Newmilns. The available potential and thermal energy resource was estimated with the goal of offsetting consumption in the local area.
Reduction in energy consumption is a prerequisite for electrification and essential to the net-zero transition
Renewable power is wonderful but if the project is not financially viable it will not get off the ground
