The New Librarians Symposium is an event for anyone who identifies as an early career information professional. Although “librarian” is in the title of the event, this is used as a catch-all phrase for librarians, archivists, record and knowledge managers, technologists, researchers and everyone in between who performs traditional or non-traditional work in the library and information science fields.
The NLS was created in 2016 for the purpose of helping new professionals (recent graduates of an Masters level LIS program* or anyone who self-identifies as being early career) to connect with each other, develop networks, explore potential collaborations, and learn. This event is not didactic or “how to” event, and will not be focused around securing a job.
Programming for the day typically features discussions led by working professionals from across the LIS field as well as structured opportunities to interact with each other.
The New Librarians Symposium is organized by Ali Versluis, Hana Storova, and Melanie Cassidy, all from the University of Guelph. Contact us by emailing newlibsymp@gmail.com or check out the #newlibsymp hashtags on Twitter.
*Precisely because the concerns and issues shared by recent graduates and early career professionals tend to be distinct, this event is not open to currently enrolled LIS students.
