A Brief History

The New Haven Register Fresh Air Fund was established in 1905 by the Jackson family, then-owners of the New Haven Register. The mission of the Fresh Air Fund is to provide outdoor camping experiences for underprivileged children in the Greater New Haven area. The Fund has a long, distinguished history and is one of the area’s oldest, most-respected charities. In 1997, the Fresh Air Fund was honored with the Clifford W. Beers “Kids Are Our Business” award in recognition of a tradition of dedication to ensure the well being of children in the community.

In 2014, the Fresh Air Fund was able to send 84 needy New Haven area children to summer camp. We hope to assist more inner-city youngsters participate in some type of summer “activity” away from the hot, urban streets. Most of these kids would not have this opportunity without our help. Each camp determines which children will receive Fresh Air Fund assistance and the dollar amount each child will receive. We do allow partial scholarships. Although we prefer the funds be allotted to children from the New Haven area - in particular the inner-city - we do recognize the need in some surrounding towns. Children whose families demonstrate a financial need from the following towns are eligible: New Haven, East Haven, West Haven, Hamden, North Haven and including Milford, Stratford, Shelton, Seymour, Ansonia, Wallingford, Branford, Guilford, North Branford and Derby.

All Fresh Air Fund Camps are pre-approved and meet strict guidelines. Most of them have been FAF-approved (Friendship Ambassadors Foundation) camps for years. All the camps submit a report at the end of the season along with copies of the applications of the children who received assistance.

As the Fund is run and administered by the New Haven Register, 100 percent of all contributions received go to provide camping experiences to local needy children. The New Haven Register absorbs all administrative expenses. The board is composed of volunteer New Haven Register employees.

The Board of Directors include the officers; Helen Bennett-Harvey, president; John Collins, vice president and treasurer; Mary-Kate Bzdyra, vice president and secretary. The Board members include Mark Brackenbury, Kevin Corrado, Marisa Dragone, Rick Sandella and Tom Wiley. Contributions may be sent to the New Haven Register's Fresh Air Fund at 100 Gando Drive, New Haven, CT 06513 or online: Help send kids to camp! Donate online here!
