The Newark Historic Buildings Tour was created by local volunteers in the cycling and historic preservation communities, in conjunction with local non-profit partner organizations.
Gemma holds a Masters in Urban Affairs and Public Policy, with a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation, from the University of Delaware. She is a Planner for the City of Wilmington, and previously worked as a historic preservation researcher for UD's Center for Historic Architecture and Design (CHAD). Gemma has bike-commuted for the past decade+ and volunteers with Newark Bike Project and Urban Bike Project of Wilmington. She is the primary author and team coordinator of the City of Wilmington's 2019 Bike Plan.
Jamie runs a software consulting firm and volunteers in several community bicycling efforts. He recently developed an interest in local history and completed a Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Delaware. Jamie grew up biking around Newark in the 1980s on his banana-seat Schwinn Stingray 3-speed bicycle, is an avid bicycle commuter, and is a co-founder, chairperson, and volunteer mechanic at Newark Bike Project as well as a volunteer with BikeNewark, Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, and the Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee.
Jim has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Delaware and is retired after twenty-five years teaching at West Chester University. He started bicycling in Europe the 1970s and leading tours in the 1980s throughout the United States. After creating and leading walking tours for years in West Chester, he brought his enthusiasm for local history back to Newark in 2018.
Guided bicycle tours are sponsored and administered by BikeNewark, with volunteer and ride support provided by Newark Bike Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit community bike shop.
