Jam the Curriculum: New Media 10 (B.C.)

A digital learning resource for exploring sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) within the New Media 10 (B.C.) curriculum.

What is SOGI?

"Everyone has a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI). It's an inclusive term that applies to everyone, whether they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, heterosexual or cisgender (identifying with the same gender that one was assigned at birth)."

(Provincial Government of British Columbia (B.C.), n.d.).

Episode #1 Unpacking SOGI in the Classroom
November 23, 2021 | 00:08:08 | E1

In this inaugural episode of Explorations in Gender and Sexual Orientation, Angela Reynolds, Anneke Nussbaum, and Chris Rugo take a retrospective look at some of the discussions they had while planning a multi-modal digital learning resource which addresses Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) in the context of the B.C. Grade 10 New Media curriculum (British Columbia Ministry of Education, 2021). This episode explores topics such as teacher fears when approaching SOGI in the classroom, the significance of lessons that reflect SOGI representation and identity at the Grade 10 level, and the evolution of language related to SOGI, while connecting it to their respective experiences and areas of practice.

This section is for teachers who wish to educate themselves before diving into the teaching modules. In this guide to SOGI in the classroom, teachers will find a toolkit packed with resources they need to confidently address SOGI themes in a high school setting. The Teachers' Guide has everything teachers need to get started:

  • Essential Vocabulary

  • What SOGI is and why you should teach it it

  • Talking to parents about SOGI in your classroom (and beyond)

  • How you can be a role model for other educators

Studies have shown that media plays a significant role in affording LGBTQ2IA+ youth the ability to explore and construct their identities in ways that challenge cis-heteronormativity (Greensmith and King, 2020). Learners can explore the intersection of gender identity, sexual identity, and media by considering a range of media texts such as literature, video games, social media, cinema, and television. This interactive, learner-centred resource addresses these topics, while also considering intersectional social identities and traditional Indigenous conceptions of Two-Spirit identity.

Student-centred and student-paced, this module is a guided media exploration through which learners examine examples of gender and sexuality representation in media and its impact on viewers. Students will explore interactive multi-modal texts and make their observations, thoughts, connections, and conclusions visible in interactive online whiteboard discussions. The digital learning resource is meant to provide students with a means to structure their exploration and the multi-modal nature mirrors the varying ways our mediated world creates narratives that guide our world view.

Inquiry Project for students

After completing Module 1 and Module 2 students can extend their understanding of Identity and Representation in media by applying their learning in an inquiry project. We have also included examples of media representation analysis:
