The New Jersey State Police has strict regulations regarding the proper wearing of uniforms and the maintenance of required equipment. Adhering to these standards is essential in ensuring that all officers present themselves as professional, prepared, and ready to serve the public.
All NJSP officers must wear the uniform as prescribed by departmental policy, ensuring it is clean, properly fitted, and worn at all times while on duty.
Uniform Composition:
Headgear: Standard-issue trooper hat (campaign hat) for outdoor duty.
Shirt: Light blue long-sleeve shirt with NJSP patches, with sleeves rolled up in hot weather.
Trousers: Dark blue, tailored to proper length.
Badge: Worn on the left side of the chest, above the pocket.
Service Weapon: Sidearm must be worn holstered on the officer’s side at all times.
Footwear: Polished black leather boots, suitable for all weather and operational conditions.
Insignia: Rank insignia must be worn on epaulets or collar, depending on rank.
Weather Conditions:
In cold weather, officers are authorized to wear a jacket or overcoat with the uniform.
Rain Gear: Official rain jackets and waterproof trousers must be worn during inclement weather.
Winter Gear: If necessary, officers may wear gloves, scarves, and ear protection that match uniform standards.
Firearms:
Officers must be equipped with an approved service weapon and ensure it is holstered properly during duty hours.
All firearms must be cleaned and maintained according to departmental procedures.
Body Armor:
Body armor must be worn at all times while on duty, and it should be regularly inspected for wear and tear.
Level II or IIIA body armor is standard issue for NJSP troopers.
Duty Belt:
Handcuffs, flashlight, radio, taser, baton, and other essential equipment must be securely placed on the duty belt.
Officers are responsible for ensuring their duty belt is organized and all items are easily accessible.
Radio & Communication Devices:
All officers must maintain their radio and ensure it is operational at all times.
Ear pieces should be used to ensure quiet communication during operations, if available.
Vehicle Equipment:
Troopers are assigned patrol vehicles, which must be stocked with emergency supplies, including medical kits, flares, fire extinguishers, and other standard operational tools.
Vehicles must be cleaned and maintained regularly as part of vehicle inspection.
Hair:
Male officers must keep their hair neatly trimmed. Female officers must keep their hair in a professional style, ensuring it does not interfere with duty.
Beards and mustaches must be neatly trimmed and not interfere with the proper use of gas masks or other safety equipment.
Facial Hair:
Beards must not exceed a short length that allows for a proper seal with breathing devices (gas masks).
Personal Hygiene:
Officers must maintain high standards of personal hygiene. Clean uniforms, proper use of deodorant, and good personal grooming practices are expected at all times.
Inspections:
Regular uniform and equipment inspections will be conducted by supervisors to ensure all officers comply with uniform and equipment standards.
Consequences:
Non-compliance with uniform or equipment standards may result in disciplinary action or a failure to perform duties to the expected standard.
