Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, for all future time, represents the day that changed America and its citizens’ way of life. The human toll of 9/11 is tragically astounding. Two thousand nine hundred seventy-seven innocent people were taken that day. Among those killed were 403 first responders. They were killed as they valiantly worked to save lives. Nearly 7000 brave servicemen have died in the ensuing responsive conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, with another 40,000 injured.
Over 20,000 workers who toiled in the place known as Ground Zero and the Pentagon to recover for the families of the bodies of the dead have developed severe health consequences because of those efforts.
One needs only to turn on the news every day to understand that the ripples of 9/11/2001, over 22 years later, 9/11 continue to impact how Americans must now conduct their lives. Daily, our way of life is threatened by those who detest and disregard human life.
The purpose of the Bedford Township 9/11 Memorial and Education Center is to provide a place to commemorate, educate about, and recall a tragic day in this country’s history. It will also portray the strength and compassion of America and its citizens.
Myrta Gschaar, widow of Robert J Gschaar. He worked for Aon at the World Trade Center Building Two when the second plane slammed into the building. I humbly stand here before you today, asking you to remember all the men, women, and children murdered on 9/11.
The Memorials Registry tracks 9/11 memorials throughout the world. It is a testament to the global impact of 9/11 and the diverse ways in which individuals and communities have continued to commemorate the victims and remember the attacks. Bedford Township and its citizens can become another testament to the global impact of September 11, 2001. We must never forget the day our country stood together as one. Our strength comes in numbers, and our enemies dare not challenge the USA https://registries.911memorial.org/#/memorials.
The proposed memorial can be erected at Centennial Park, adjusting to the Bedford Library at Jackman Road. Following the approval of the Bedford Township Parks Board, Bedford Township Trustees, and County Board Commissioners for building the memorial, we can start hiring tradespeople and funding for the project.
Architect Scott Heacock of Toledo, Ohio, is designing the proposed memorial. Scott is a seasoned architect who designed the 911 First Responders Memorial https://toledomemorialpark.com/911-first-responders-memorial The first Responders Memorial at Toledo Memorial in Sylvania, OH.
The proposed Bedford Township “Never Forget 911 Memorial” is applying for non-profit status (501c3) and forming a focus group and committee board. We invite anyone interested in participating to help us create a focus group with a facilitator who shares our vision. Please call 734-347-8362 and leave any information needed to develop the “Never Forget 911 Memorial.
9/11/2001 was a pivotal day in American history. The events of that horrific morning immediately changed, altered, and affected how we in this country must now conduct our daily lives. These innocent people were doing what Americans do: working to support their families. Every State in our country lost someone or contains family members of a loved one who perished that day.
9/11 was indeed a global event, as citizens of over seventy countries died that day. Every major religion and ethnic group of the world is represented among those killed.
The attacks on 9/11/2001 were meant to be an attack against our way of life. A way of life granted by the hard-fought-for rights, freedoms, and liberties we are all privileged to share in America.
Those who plotted, planned, and then attacked meant to weaken our country, destroy our economy, and divide our nation’s people. They failed. Instead, what emerged from the ashes of destruction reaffirmed this great country's unity, strength, and resolve and revealed its citizenry's genuine compassion.
Remembrance, Unity, Strength, and Resolve: As the memorial committee discussed what elements the memorial should portray, it was with these thoughts and input that the design was developed. This is not a memorial meant to serve only one community. They can help other committees design and erect a 9/11 memorial in their town and or/ counties.
The 9/11 memorial in Bedford Township is designed to help all who were most affected by the attacks to heal—and those with no memory of the attacks to understand losses that will forever be incomprehensible. The Bedford Township 9/11 Memorial proudly displays the American Flag, the 911/ Flag, the Bedford Township Flag, and the Bedford Fire Department's Flag—a remembrance of a tragic yet historic event in America’s history.
The attacks in New York, in our nation’s capital, and on an airplane over Pennsylvania were felt in every community in our state, and the ripple effects will continue to affect all in our country. The Board expects visitors to come away from this memorial with a better understanding of 9/11/2001 and a reaffirmation of the principles and privileges Americans share.
The primary goal is that this memorial will, for generations to come, stand as a historical touchstone linking the past event of 9/11/2001 to the present. The monument will be a physical structure that will, in a respectful manner, honor the memory of those lost that day and in the resulting conflicts afterward. It will stand as an essential source of information for young people to understand the sacrifices of 9/11, yet also portray the strength and spirit of America. Both of which emerged unscathed in their aftermath.
It is envisioned that parents and educators will use this memorial to help instruct their children and students about a day in this country’s history that altered their future.
Thankfully, it is a pivotal day when they cannot have conscious memory. The selfless sacrifice of first responders on that day, and every day, will be prominently honored. Our brave service members who responded in the aftermath of 9/11, as well as those who labored to recover the missing, will be focal points of the memorial. Our children will benefit from a place to create memories near and far.
They will spread the news of our heroes who passed on. Education serves to inform today’s generation and the future. We must instill our heroes’ memories and never forget their sufferings and sacrifices. With the proposed memorial project, we can and will “Never Forget.”
