Much esteemed director!
I have your letter dated 2 June, addressed to Friedenfels and a postcard dated 31 May, which was sent to me from St. Petersburg, and I beg your pardon that I have not responded for so long: in Friedenfels I sojourned about 2 weeks and I was so busy with care, that time and leisure lacked for writing a letter. I fasted: 7 days I was without food, but always with a lot of movement, exercise, cold baths, baths of air and sun and massage; in this way, I have lost around 8 kilograms (12%) of my weight in ten days, namely the worst part of it. — I have sojourned here since yesterday, no longer in a sanitorium, but in a vegetarian pension, where I coninue the baths of air, sun and cold water and exercise, but I have more leisure time.
I will start to answer your card dated 31 May.
I thank you for the congratulations on the occasion of [my] reelection as vicedirector; I will try to be useful still. — I think that we will easily find collaborators; it might be difficult because collaborators need to pay.
[In the meantime, you have probably received my phonetical article with 2 tables; I ask you to change each ts in it with tz, which is more correct in regard to pronunciation and which is found in German and French!]
I am very happy that the Academy will grow.
Regarding Mr. Bernhaupt in Bayreuth I must say that I cannot recommend him as a member of the Academy. I have nothing against receiving articles from his pen if you find them acceptable, but I am against receiving him as an active member. He was already a member from 1887-1890 and he abandoned the Academy because it was too progressive; he fervently took part in arguments with Volapükists regarding matters of little worth, on which occasions he went beyond the limits of politeness necessary in society. I will vote against him if anyone should propose him as a member. Afterwards, he learned Idiom Neutral and wrote letters and articles in its favour, e.g. a long article, but without great worth, in 1908 in the journal Lebenskunst (ed. K. Lentze in Leipzig, our academician).A He tried to enter again in the Academy during the directorship of Mr. Holmes, but he had no success; you will find his name in Holmes’ circulars.
I will attempt with pleasure to make a translation in Idiom Neutral of your propositions on pp. 83-86; your Vocabulario is with me. But it will take some time because I want to do this translation correctly and I do not have here many books which would help. This letter departed without a translation.

Response concerning the letter dated 2 June.
Yes, the society must be “limited”. — Mr. Molenaar already wanted to become a member of the Academy 2 or 3 years ago, but he asked that we make an exception for him regarding freedom to propagate his “Panroman”. The Academy was not able to change its principles for one member — and Mr. Molenaar did not become a member. Now a general freedom regarding using whatever language one pleases is given by you to each academician and I think that this circumstance will be very important to persuade Mr Molenaar to work with us. Write this to him when you renew the invitation and send him my salutation and ask him to join us.
I will be very happy to see you in Switzerland. Now and until 20 July probably, I am in Alpnach-Dorf; afterwards I will probably be in Vitznau by the Lake of the Four Cantons (Lake Lucerne). — When you have photographs I ask you not to forget my request and send me a copy.
Schleyer lives in Konstanz, Baden. Until December 1908, he edited his journal “Volapükabled lezenodik”.
Bonto not only should be considered as a representative of the Netherlands, but he is the representative of the Netherlands. I think (I don't have circular No. 73 here) that Belgium can have only one academician because Congo was considered as a separate state; but now these two states are united and Belgium can have more academicians; please examine the respective paragraph of the Regulativi in Holmes’ circular No. 73! In this way, Mr. Meysmans can be accepted following §4 of the statutes and not according to §6. — It is not necessary that candidates be proposed by several academicians (the director alone suffices, if the club does not propose a candidate; §9), but I approve such use to be introduced. — I do not know Mr. Korselt at all! Please ask him to write to me!

Yes, “Latino sine flexione” and Idiom Neutral are very similar, but Idiom Neutral has a Natural Language — Neutral Language dictionary, while L.s.Fl does not or does not yet have such a dictionary, which is why one must look for words in the Latin dictionary and take the root each time, which is quite difficult, especially for persons who do not know Latin well; besides this, one must add a certain ending, e.g., o or e, Latino sine flexione, and I do not know the rule for this. It seems to me that such endings are totally superfluous and give only difficulty; it seems that these endings are often Italian or Spanish endings, but the one who does not know these languages cannot guess them. As regards orthography, I think also that L.s.Fl. uses an more applicable orthography, an orthography which I have recommended in issue 11 and following of Progres.
If the response of Mr. Antonio can come to you in 20 days, one must still add some time for the response and I think that one can fix now 30 days for the receiving of a response, with which time you should no longer wait. Let us change §4 of the Regulativi in this direction.
I am still not acquainted with the book of Cout., Ostw., Lorenz etc. “Wissenschaft in Weltsprache”.
I am finished and I hasten to dispatch this letter. I will start today the desired translation. I will probably translate your sentences in classic Idiom Neutral and in the project of the language contained in issues 11, 15, 16 and 18 of Progres. This work will be instructive.
