To Mr. Prof. G. Peano in Turin
Highly esteemed sir!
I had the honor to send you a postcard dated 28 November/11 December 1907 with the following text:
“I thank you very much for the kind card dated 5 December. I am very happy that you do not refuse to accept the possible selection as Director of the International Academy of L.U., but that you say only that the qualities of a director are lacking and that you do not have time to do the work of completing the dictionary from the circulars. Regarding the first argument, I find that it is only a phrase showing your modesty—and I did not think that I could be director when they selected me, but I have accomplished my task; and regarding the second argument you are in error: the largest part of the work of completing the dictionary has already been done, which you can see in the supplement to the dictionary, which I had the honor to send to you two days ago. The remaining few words can be done and not only by the director: you will have a vice-director and two secretaries. Therefore, I hope that you will accept, which I beg you to confirm via letter or brief card. P.S. I write to you and not to Prof. M. because I personally prefer you.”
Until now I have not received a response. It is possible and even probable that you have not received my mentioned postcard. Therefore, I have written the above copy of it and I ask you again to have the kindness to honor me briefly with a response—I hope with an affirmative response. I enclose a reply postcard addressed with the request to use this card, if it is worthwhile.
With respectful greetings, I remain your most devoted servant,
V. Rosenberger
P.S. Respond immediately, please! R.
1 The phrase efektuar problem seems to derive from the German Aufgabe erfüllen (to complete a task, do one's duty). Here “problem” is understood in the sense of “task, assignment”.
2 Komplesans (complaisance) does not appear in the 1902 dictionary, but it is cleary a more international variant of what would be the regularly derived komplesantitet.
