In a recent feature in Woman’s World Magazine, Dr. Chapman explains the growing incidence of vascular cognitive impairment. She goes on to emphasize the risks, common symptoms, and proactive steps one can take in order to minimize developing vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. In this article, she explains how managing modifiable risk factors, such as chronic hypertension with anti-hypertensive medications can serve as a key strategy in effectively maintaining a healthy cerebral circulation and prolonging neurocognitive health.
Articles in prominent magazines that feature input from experts like Dr. Chapman are an important way to bring accurate information to the general public. More importantly, the cognitive challenges that face women as they age are different than in men. Once a woman goes through menopause, she becomes at greater risk for cerebrovascular disease, stroke, and vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. Woman's World has dozens of articles featuring expertise from researchers tailored to women at older ages with simple and effective methods to maintain healthy brain function. These even include lovely hobbies such as gardening and knitting!

In addition to being an Undergraduate Research Assistant in our Neurovascular & Dementia Lab, she is also gaining experience in clinical psychology as a Research Assistant in Dr. Balderrama-Durbin's Couple Adjustment to Stress and Trauma (CAST) Lab. Risa has continuously sought opportunities to maximize her undergraduate experience and has worked hard to enhance the experiences and opportunities for others in the campus community. Congratulations, Risa, an honor well deserved!
Risa and Brian were some of the first Chapman Lab members at Binghamton University! They joined Spring '24 and were instrumental in getting the lab set up from scratch. Both were then hired as research assistants working in lab full-time during the summer of 2024 where they, among others, completed Morris water maze tasks to understand how learning and memory function change during chronic hypertension and after menopause. Risa and Brian are among the inaugural Chapman Lab "class" and will be graduating May, 2025!
Dinin, a first year undergraduate student at Binghamton University, and friends recently founded a non-profit organization called BC Bridge. She says, "After learning about the high poverty rates in our local community, we were inspired to take action. Through this initiative, we organize monthly resource distribution fairs aimed at supporting the homeless population in Broome County."
