Hartland Quay is home to the popular Hartland Quay Hotel & Wreckers Bar, a much-loved local destination serving simple meals and offering a wonderful vantage point from which to watch the sun set over the sea. The hotel also houses a small museum, providing a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich maritime history.
Beyond the hotel, the dramatic coastline is renowned for its spectacular geology, rugged rock formations, rock pools and secluded sandy coves, making it a wonderful place to explore and enjoy the beauty of the North Devon coast.
With its wild, atmospheric landscape and spectacular coastal scenery, Hartland Quay has also become a popular filming location, featuring in a number of films and television productions.
Blackchurch Rock is one of North Devon’s most photographed landmarks – and it’s easy to see why. This striking rocky formation rising from the shoreline is a truly impressive sight and well worth the walk.
The route from the National Trust car park at Brownsham Woods follows a straightforward section of the South West Coast Path, with a few steep ups and downs along the way. Your efforts are rewarded with spectacular coastal views and the dramatic sight of Blackchurch Rock itself.
Be sure to check the tide times before setting out, as Blackchurch Rock is only accessible at low tide. The National Trust car park at Brownsham Woods is free.
Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall is one of North Devon’s most spectacular hidden gems, where a dramatic waterfall plunges down the rugged cliffs towards the sea. Reached via the South West Coast Path (a 20 min walk from Harland Quay) the walk is steep in places but well worth the effort, with breathtaking coastal scenery and the chance to experience one of the wildest and most beautiful corners of the North Devon coast.
Clovelly Harbour Village
Clovelly is one of North Devon’s most enchanting coastal spots, with its famous cobbled streets winding steeply down to a picturesque fishing harbour. The whitewashed cottages, colourful boats and sea views create a wonderfully timeless atmosphere. It’s a beautiful place to wander, explore the harbour and enjoy the peaceful charm of this unique historic village.
Hartland Abbey is a beautiful historic country house set within peaceful woodland, gardens and parkland close to the dramatic North Devon coast. The elegant house and surrounding estate are steeped in history and have also provided the setting for several film and television productions, making it a fascinating place to explore.
The grounds offer lovely walks through tranquil countryside, with beautiful gardens, woodland and glimpses of the coast.
