Title: Inquiry in a Mathematical Classroom: Exploring Linear Transformations
Abstract: This session will explore what an inquiry-focused lesson looks like via a linear algebra activity. In a classroom centered around inquiry, students engage deeply with coherent and meaningful mathematical tasks via a collaborative process. Meanwhile, instructors inquire into student thinking and foster equity in their design and facilitation choices. In this session, participants will experience an inquiry classroom, analyze its components, and identify teacher practices that support student inquiry. We will also demonstrate how IBL techniques can be implemented in a remote environment. As time permits, particular emphasis will be given on the questions an instructor experienced in lecture-based learning might have in transitioning to an inquiry approach.
