About Green Bank Observatory

A world leader in advancing radio astronomy research, innovation and education, Green Bank Observatory (GBO) enables leading-edge research at radio wavelengths by offering telescope, facility and advanced instrumentation access to the astronomy research community as well as to other basic and applied research communities. Nestled in the mountains of West Virginia within the National Quiet Zone, at GBO radio astronomers are listening to the remote whispers of the universe in order to discover answers to our most astounding astronomical questions. GBO is home to the world’s largest fully-steerable radio telescope, which has a massive 100-meter dish, the size of an entire football field. Many important scientific discoveries have taken place in this creative space.

National Radio Quiet Zone

The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) was established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Docket No. 11745 (November 19, 1958) and by the Interdepartment Radio Advisory Committee (IRAC) in Document 3867/2 (March 26, 1958) to minimize possible harmful interference to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Green Bank, WV and the radio receiving facilities for the United States Navy in Sugar Grove, WV. The NRQZ is bounded by NAD-83 meridians of longitude at 78d 29m 59.0s W and 80d 29m 59.2s W and latitudes of 37d 30m 0.4s N and 39d 15m 0.4s N, and encloses a land area of approximately 13,000 square miles near the state border between Virginia and West Virginia.

Telephone Service at GBO

Your cell phones will not work in and around the Observatory, so once you arrive on site, please place your cell phone in airplane mode to conserve battery. You will have a telephone in your room. If you wish to use it, please bring a prepaid phone card with you. We strongly encourage you to make arrangements to use Skype, WhatsApp, Facetime, etc. with your family or others you need to keep connected with.

If anyone needs to reach you in an emergency, they can call (304) 456-2011 and tell the operator your name and that you are attending the NEREID Workshop, and they may also email Tim Spuck at tspuck@aui.edu AND Yasmin Catricheo at ycatricheo@aui.edu

Internet Service at Green Bank Observatory

There is no WiFi at GBO due to the radio interference it creates. You will have access to internet via ethernet cable. If you have an ethernet adapter, PLEASE bring it with you! We do have some onsite, but not enough for everyone.
