The Challenges and Practice of Transformative Learning
In Transnational Higher Education in China
My research project explores the application of transformative learning (TL) within the context of Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) in China, focusing on Sino-foreign cooperative programs.
As defined by Mezirow (1997), transformative learning involves a fundamental shift in perspective through critical reflection, enabling individuals to challenge their assumptions and beliefs. This study investigates how TL can be integrated into TNHE programs to foster cognitive and behavioral changes among students, preparing them for global careers and enhancing their adaptability in diverse cultural contexts.
The findings highlight the importance of critical thinking, facilitative teaching methods, cultural understanding, and innovative problem-solving in fostering transformative learning experiences. The study also emphasizes the need for comprehensive onboarding for foreign professors, language support for students, and the integration of localized content into curricula. By addressing these challenges, TNHE programs can enhance their effectiveness and better prepare students for the demands of a globalized workforce.
This research contributes to the academic theorizing of transformative learning by comprehensively understanding its application in TNHE in China. It also offers practical recommendations for educators, administrators, and policymakers to improve the design and delivery of joint programs, ensuring they deliver real value to students and institutions alike. Ultimately, this study aims to advance scholarly understanding and provide actionable strategies for fostering transformative learning in transnational higher education.
