Be sure to answer the five W's – who, what, what, when, where and why.
Ask open-ended questions. Avoid yes or no type questions. Instead of “Has your neighborhood changed since you moved in,” ask, “How has your neighborhood changed since you moved in?”
You can ask questions like, “Tell me more about that,” to get more information about a topic or conversation.
It’s OK to let silences linger. They might fill the silence with more information.
At the end of the interview, ask the person if there’s anything else on their mind you didn’t ask about.
