Good Faith Fee Estimate Requirement (Massachusetts Law)

Purpose:
To protect patients from unexpected medical bills by requiring providers to disclose service costs in advance of treatment.

Who It Applies To:

• All licensed healthcare providers in MA (including mental health professionals like NGC).

• Both insured and self-pay clients.

Key Requirements:

1. Written Estimate:

   • Provide a fee schedule (found below) listing standard rates for all services (e.g., therapy, assessments).

   • For insured clients: Include copay/coinsurance estimates based on their plan.

2. Timing:

   • Must be given:

     • Before first appointment (e.g., via intake packet).

     • Upon request at any time.

     • If services change (e.g., adding group therapy).

3. Content:

   • Base fees (e.g., $185 for 90837).

   • Sliding scale options (if offered).

   • Cancellation/no-show fees.

   • Any other potential charges (e.g., records requests).

4. Exceptions:

   • Emergencies (but must follow up with estimate afterward).

   • If the client declines the estimate in writing.

• Available up to 75% off standard fees based on:

  • Provider participation and agreement

  • Demonstrated financial need

Sponsor-a-Service Certificates

• Donors may purchase service certificates to fund low/no-cost care for those with minimal access.

• $1 = 1 minute of sponsored care (for any service offered by a participating clinician).

Insurance & Telehealth

• Insured clients: Fees subject to copay/coinsurance (verify benefits with your insurer).

• Telehealth: All virtual sessions (via doxy.me) billed at same rates as in-person.
