Daylight Studies in Vanuatu
The light and position of the Sun and Moon vary over the course of a day and throughout the year, influencing natural rhythms from plant phenology and animal migration to winds and tides. In southern Vanuatu, these cycles act as guides for human activities, including crop harvest, fishing, marine tenure, and ritual, in systems called ecological calendars. Simultaneously, the Sun and Moon are central, animate figures in stories, and in local time-reckoning and identities today.
