Welcome to the School and University Partnerships (SUP) community at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Through our partnerships with local school systems and educational organizations, teacher candidates engage in authentic, hands-on learning experiences that connect theory to practice. These collaborative relationships provide opportunities for future educators to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to positively impact diverse learners and school communities.
Our partnership model is grounded in mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Together, NDMU faculty and school-based educators create learning environments that support the professional growth of teacher candidates while contributing to student success and school improvement.
The National Association for School-University Partnerships (NASUP) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing and supporting collaborations between PK-12 schools and higher education institutions, particularly through models such as Professional Development Schools (PDSs) and other clinically rich partnership structures. Its mission focuses on improving student learning, strengthening educator preparation, fostering reciprocal professional learning, and promoting collaborative research and inquiry.
A Professional Development School (PDS) is a collaboratively planned and implemented partnership for the academic and clinical preparation of interns and the continuous professional development of both school system and institution of higher education (IHE) faculty. The focus of the PDS partnership is improved student performance through research-based teaching and learning. A PDS may involve a single or multiple schools: school systems and IHEs, and may take many forms to reflect specific partnership activities and approaches to improving both teacher education and PreK-12 schools. At NDMU, we believe that effective educator preparation is a collective endeavor. Through strong partnerships, shared expertise, and a commitment to excellence, we create transformative learning experiences for teacher candidates while supporting the success of PK-12 students and schools. We are grateful for the dedication of our student interns, mentor teachers, Site Coordinators, University Liaisons, and school partners who make this important work possible.
