Using mathematics to analyze cardiac arrhythmias

Abstract
Insight into basic science often leads to technological advances. In this talk, I will discuss efforts to translate insights about cardiac dynamics derived from tissue culture experiments and mathematical models to help analyze serious cardiac arrhythmias. I will focus on two different clinical problems that can be monitored using wearable sensors: diagnosing atrial fibrillation and assessing the mechanism of a common arrhythmia, premature ventricular complexes, that is usually benign but can sometime lead to more serious arrhythmia. These are such common clinical issues that almost everyone can anticipate encountering them in themselves or close friends and family at some point in their lives.Â
