Living Shorelines Academy Introduction

3 Hours: 

Intro Course:

March 27, 2-5 pm

The Living Shoreline Academy-Intro will serve as a basic introduction to living shorelines.  Students will learn about living shoreline concepts, construction and permitting processes.  The Living Shoreline Intro Course covers existing natural shoreline stabilization techniques currently used throughout Coastal North Carolina.  This course will also provide an overview for different types of living shoreline projects using case studies and current research. The course will prepare students to be familiar with effective stabilization options and considerations, as well as how to navigate the permitting process to install living shorelines within Carteret County. Tuition $35.00

Audience: Property owners, local government personnel, planning consultants.

Structures and Design

Wednesdays in April: 4/3, 4/10, 4/17, 4/24

This course provides a comprehensive overview of planning and implementing living shoreline projects in North Carolina. Emphasizing a step-by-step approach, participants will learn considerations for design, construction materials, and addressing vulnerabilities found commonly in coastal NC. The course focuses on guiding students in designing effective, research-based living shoreline solutions for private property projects based on visual assessments. By course end, students will be proficient in designing and utilizing appropriate materials for their projects. 

Tuition $35.00

Vegetative Restoration

Through a series of in person, field experiences, learners will learn about the native shoreline vegetation found on the coast along with techniques for installing to bolster natural shoreline stabilization projects.

The story of the NC Living Shorelines Academy

Thanks to a grant from USCRP and NC Sea Grant, the NC Living Shoreline Academy offers a comprehensive program to offer learners the skills to design and install natural shoreline solutions, also known as "Living Shorelines".  From site assessments to permitting to project installation, the NC Living Shoreline Academy wants to support effective and resilient coastal property management solutions.
