Just two years ago (Summer 2023), our garden was only a humble patch where we grew in small planters. At this point, we didn't have a watering hose yet or a shed to store our gardening tools.
We started a large expansion project in the Spring of 2023, mulching a wide area and building many larger planters from scratch.
In the 2024-2025 school year, we had even more people than the years prior to futher increase the planter areas, and spread more awareness throughout the school and our community to push our garden even futher.
Thanks to the help of many people, our garden is now much larger and continues to grow, and we can plant a wide variety of crops and plants!
NCHS Garden, September 2025
Currently, the NCHS Garden Club grows plants in a few different areas of student-built planters that are located right on the school's campus.
Another large area of raised beds is cooperatively maintained with outside community members, who grow their own vegetation. Plants are continually watered throughout the week by both club and community members.
Plants are grown over a layer of mulch and cardboard, to retain the soil and suppress weed growth. Additionally, surrounding fences also protect the planters from rabbits. We have also greatly improved the soil quality for our beds this year.
Crops are grown seasonally and carefully to ensure the best harvest. We apply what we've learned about gardening in previous years to help with the growth process in the ensuing years.
For example, trellises are used to support certain plants, including the very popular beans we've grown in the past.
We are also utilizing the use of different fertilizers to promote plant growth and a more bountiful harvest.
Another important consideration is our process of planning to expand our coverage what to do with the land that we'll obtain.

We are currently expanding our garden area even further around the first Building.
We plan to add more fences as well as 8-9 raised beds in the new area, along with adding more areas with mulch and cardboard.
We are planning to produce and donate even more crops to the food bank, and any support available would be amazing. (More in 2025 and Beyond)
